The following is a short excerpt from a larger piece written by Bobbie Hasselbring about the Center for Animal Law Studies. The full-length piece is scheduled to appear in the next issue of Lewis & Clark, The Chronicle Magazine.

Historically, the Animal Law program at Lewis & Clark Law School has been the product of student drive and initiative. Students first identified Animal Law as a substantive and emerging field of law that deserved attention. They formed the initial collaboration with the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) to form the first student ADLF chapter. It was Lewis & Clark students who demanded more scholarship in the form of the Animal Law Journal and the annual Animal Law Conference. It was students who wanted practical expereience in the Animal Law Clinic, the summer program and moot court competitions. And it was students who thought there should be a center that would bring together Animal Law resources for scholars, students and practitioners.
