Earthrise Law Center is accepting applications for its summer of 2013 externship program. You can find information about Earthrise and the work it does here.
As it did in 2012 (when it was called “PEAC”), this summer Earthrise will have a summer externship program that allows Lewis & Clark students to receive academic credit for their summer work. Earthrise’s summer externs’ responsibilities will include assisting Earthrise clinical professors in all aspects of public interest environmental litigation from legal research, drafting pleadings and motions, and potential for court appearances. Earthrise now has one staff attorney based in the Northeast (Massachusetts), and it may be possible for one extern also to be based in the Northeast. Earthrise externs will be expected to work a minimum of ten weeks, forty hours per week. Externs’ actual work schedule will be flexible, allowing for vacations and long weekends. Because the minimum time requirement for an externship is 8 weeks, it might be possible for a student to combine a for-credit 8 week externship with a paid 2-4 week internship funded by a PILP stipend.
Becoming an Earthrise summer extern requires a two-step application process. Students first must apply directly to Earthrise. After Earthrise accepts their applications, the students will then apply for their externships through the Career Services Office. Earthrise will assist the accepted students with the Career Services application process, but before applying to Earthrise interested students should review Lewis & Clark’s general externship requirements to be sure they qualify.
Earthrise will accept applications from any student who will have completed three semesters before their externship begins in late May or early June 2013. Earthrise is looking for applicants with strong research and writing skills and a demonstrated interest in public interest environmental law.
Submit your application electronically to Tom Buchele, Earthrise Managing Attorney at tbuchele@lclark.edu.That application should include a cover letter explaining your interest in externing at Earthrise, your current resume, a transcript (unofficial is fine), and maximum 10-page writing sample. Do not send hard copies to Earthrise. Please e-mail Tom with any questions. All applications must be received on or before Monday, February 11, 2013, at 5pm. Tom will acknowledge his receipt of all applications via e-mail.
