Professional Background

Professor Gerald Torres, visits from the University of Texas Law School. He is nationally recognized as an expert in Indian law having taught and published on Indian law issues for may years. He was Deputy Assistant Attorney General for The Environment and Natural Resources division of the U.S. Justice Department. He also served as Counsel to Attorney General Janet Reno and was instrumental in establishing the Office of Tribal Justice in the Department of Justice. He developed his Indian jurisprudence course specifically for the summer program. He is co-author, with Lani Guinier, of The Miner's Canary: Enlisting race, resisting power, transforming democracy, a book recently nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
