Jerry Carleton Wins Publication in NAELA Student Journal

Jerry Carleton Presenting at ConferenceJerry Carleton won publication of his paper on the viability and funding of Medicare in the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys Student Journal. The purpose of the competition is to foster interest and understanding of diversity issues in the field of elder law. The writing competition was open to all U.S. law students. Jerry's paper, entitled The Solvency Solution: How a "quick fix" will ensure Medicare’s Solvency, finished in the top eight.

Jerry is a fourth year evening student at Lewis and Clark. He is the co-founder of Keen Mobility, a medical device company. Through his work with his company and at the law school Jerry has a valuable perspective on Medicare that is receiving national attention.

"This competition and the preparation I received from the school in creating the paper have been extremely valuable in attempting to hone a comprehensive solution for the funding of Medicare. I have submitted my paper and/or the ideas therein to several contacts in Washington DC, in the hopes that I can help effect change within the current system, which we are very fortunate to have as citizens of the US. I am a big believer in CMMS, but also believe that the system could perform even better to serve the US population with some work."

Jerry credits both his personal background and the law school with his success in the writing competition. "I was well prepared to write on the topic due to my experience in healthcare, and after taking Professor LaFrance's Healthcare Delivery class - and I attribute even receiving the award to Prof. LaFrance as he is the one who encouraged me to enter the competition in the first place."
