School of Law Law School Registrar Course Schedule Employment Law Seminar

Employment Law Seminar

Description:

This year, the seminar will focus primarily on three developments that are changing the "where," the "how," and the "who" of the traditional workplace. First, we will discuss the telecommuting phenomenon, in which centralized worksites are being replaced with a variety of distributed work arrangements. Second, we will analyze the impact of technology in the workplace. And third, explore the increase in the contingent workforce and the effects of a high velocity labor market. In each of these areas, the focus will be both theoretical and practical. We will identify the legal issues implicated by these developments and analyze whether traditional employment laws are effective in non-traditional work environments. In addition, we will consider the steps that businesses should take to address concrete problems and avoid legal risks when adopting these structural changes. Grades will be based on class participation and a research paper that will satisfy the "A" writing requirement.

Prerequisite: Employment Law I
