Appellate Courts Seminar

Description:

This two-hour course is designed to introduce students to essential concepts in appellate practice across a range of cases (civil, criminal, administrative) in the state and federal systems. These include appellate jurisdiction; preserving claims of error and perfecting an appeal; the nature of facts on appeal; and standards of appellate review. Although this is not a course in appellate advocacy, one segment of the course addresses basic principles of effective appellate advocacy, coupled with an examination of some common patterns and practices that appellate courts follow to decide cases.
