Registration Guidelines

Registration Instructions and Priority Planning

  • You may want to consult with law faculty or administrators, prior to registering for courses.
  • Plan your schedule. Course Schedule information is always available from the Law Registrar’s homepage. The online course schedule has current information. Some classes may have room changes. Do not assume a class that was open two days ago will still be open.
  • You may select your courses online BEFORE your registration appointment day, listing them as your “Preferred Sections”. The “Preferred Sections” List functions like a “shopping cart” with an online vendor. At your appointment day and time, you can choose to Register for, Waitlist for, or Remove a class from your Preferred List.

CHOOSE YOUR COURSES/SECTIONS - NOW, BEFORE YOUR REGISTRATION TIME

You should be able to register from any computer that has web access. (The computer must be set to accept cookies.) Macintosh users may have difficulty using internet explorer. You may wish to use a different browser.

Go to WebAdvisor and log in with your LC email login and password (do not include the @lclark.edu). Your Lewis & Clark Email user name and password = your WebAdvisor login and password

To set up your WebAdvisor account or if you have forgotten your login or password, visit our Information Technology web site at http://www.lclark. edu/~infotech/CONNECTIONS/ acctmgmt.html or if you have forgotten your user name or password or need to reset your account visit the following web page: http://www.lclark. edu/~infotech/CONNECTIONS/ pwreset.html.

Please note: It may take 24 hours for your WebAdvisor account to reset, then allowing you to register on or after your designated registration.

Find Your Registration Appointment for each semester listed on WebAdvisor under the My Registration Permissions header.

Go to Register for Sections – Most of the options on this menu will eventually lead to a “Register and Drop Sections” page. You may select your courses at any time and place them on your “Preferred Sections” list. Then, on your registration day after your appointment time you can register for priority sections on day one and two without searching for them.

What Does Each Option Do?

Search and Register for Sections
Use this option if you would like to look for sections and add them to your preferred list of sections. You will be able to register for these courses on your appointment day.

Express Registration
Use this option if you know the exact subject, course and section numbers of the sections you wish to add to your preferred list. (Example: LAW 100-A). You will be able to register for this course on your appointment time.

Register for Previously Selected Sections
Use this option if you have already placed sections in your “Preferred Sections” list and it is the day to register.

Drop Sections
Use this option if you would like to drop a section only. (Other choices also allow you to drop a section while your register for another.)

Manage My Waitlist
Use this option if you would like to register for, or remove yourself from, waitlists for sections for which your are currently waitlisted.

Notes for Using WebAdvisor

  • When using web registration, if the screens are left on the computer monitor for a long time, without input from you, they will internally logout without your knowledge and you will have to login again from scratch. It is best to determine and make a list of courses you will register for, using the Course Selection Worksheet, before you start this process so there is a minimum of pauses for the registration program.
  • Be sure to click on the Submit button ONLY ONCE and then wait for the next page to come up. If you click multiple times, you will get a “multiple submit” warning and have to start again. Click the Menu at the top right of the screen to start over.
  • CHECK YOUR SCHEDULE Before logging off, choose My Class Schedule on the Student Menu to verify that you registered for your courses correctly. It is a good idea to print your schedule at this time. If you have any questions later, contact the Registrar's Office. LOG OUT of WebAdvisor for your security and close your browser.

ONLINE REGISTRATION

Day Division students and students who do not qualify as “evening-only” students will be given an appointment time for each of the three priority days of registration. (Evening-only students see the paragraph below). You will have access to register from the time your appointment starts until midnight on each of the first two priority days. From the time of your third appointment, you will have access to add and drop for either semester through September 1, the last day to add/drop on line for fall semester. After September 2nd , you may submit in person, fax (503-768-6850) or email (lawreg@lclark.edu) a completed fall add/drop form to the Registrar’s office. Spring on-line registration resumes November 3, 2008 and continues until December 3, 2008; it will resume on-line from January 5 through the first week of spring add/drop, January 19, 2009. After this date, add/drop will be transacted only at the Registrar’s office.

Evening-only Student Registration
Students who entered law school as evening division students, who have been evening division throughout and will continue as evening division students for the 4-year program may qualify as an “evening-only” student. Besides attending strictly as evening division students throughout enrollment, “evening-only” students must take only evening classes. Failure to comply may mean an Honor Code violation. If a student qualifies, he must contact the Registrar’s office to confirm his status, lawreg@lclark.edu. Evening-only students will be given a registration time of Sunday, June 1, 6pm to midnight to register completely for both fall and spring semesters. This opportunity assures the evening-only students enrollment in the evening classes. Evening-only students will not have access to the registration system again until June 4, at 6:00p.m. - after all day and non evening-only have completed registration. If an evening-only student cannot register on Sunday, June 1, he should contact the Law Registrar staff, lawreg@lclark.edu, for assistance.

Prerequisites
During the priority days, June 2 and 3, you will be able to register for a class without the necessary prerequisite. However after June 3, you will be expected to register for any prerequisite needed. At that time you also will be expected to register only for courses for which you have met the prerequisites. Check prerequisites in the current online Course Schedule.

Courses Requiring Professor Consent
Consult your instructor for consent if you wish to take a class (or add yourself to a waitlist) and have not met the prerequisites or if the class requires instructor consent. Courses requiring professor consent will only be added through the Registrar’s Office.

Waitlist Sign-up
Beginning June 5, students will be allowed to sign-up for waitlists for classes that are closed.
Waitlist Invitations
Beginning August 1, for fall semester only, if you are next on the waitlist and a seat becomes available, you will receive an email to your LC email notifying you that you have been given permission to register yourself in the course (online). This permission is not transferable (the seat is reserved for you). Notification of spring waitlist openings will start November 3.

Be kind - If you no longer want to take the course, please go to “Manage My Waitlist” and remove yourself from the list.

Waitlist Deadlines
The email you will receive notifying you that you have permission to register in the waitlisted course will give you a deadline of 3 days by which you must add the course if you want it. If you do not add this course by the deadline, your permission will expire and the seat will be offered to the next person on the waitlist. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR EMAIL AT LEAST EVERY OTHER DAY, EVEN DURING THE SUMMER AND WINTER BREAKS.

Be kind - If you get an invitation and you no longer want to take the class, go to “Manage My Waitlist” and remove yourself from your list, thus allowing someone else a chance to be sent an invitation.

Courses with Time Conflicts
If you want to take two courses that have a time conflict, no matter how small the conflict, you will not be permitted to register for both. However, you can be waitlisted for a course that conflicts in time with a course for which you are registered.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR PROBLEMS, PLEASE CONSULT THE LAW REGISTRAR’S OFFICE (lawreg@lclark.edu).

WEBADVISOR REGISTRATION PROCEDURES:

Remember Registration can only be done at your appointed time on June 1, 2, 3 and 4. Also, the actual registration is done on the Register and Drop Sections page. This is the same place where you store your "Preferred Sections," which is your previously selected course information.

Search and Register

  1. Choose the term (08/FL = Law Fall 2008, or 09/SL = Law Spring 2009) at the top of the screen. This mandatory for every search that you enter.
  2. Do not enter the Start and End Dates – this will only slow down your search.
  3. WebAdvisor is shared with all schools at Lewis & Clark. To narrow and assist with your search and registration, it is always a good idea to select “Law School” in the Academic Level box at the bottom of the page.
  4. Enter up to 5 subjects. You can enter course levels, course numbers and even section numbers if you know the specific courses your want. If you know all the specifics for all of your courses, “Express Registration” will be faster for you.
  5. Choosing "Course Types" will allow you to search for specific types of classes, i.e. Business Law, Environmental Law, etc. You can search for Seminars or Professional Skills classes using this function. You can also find courses for A or B Writing Requirements. Click the option arrow in the Course Type field and highlight the type of course you want.
  6. Submit your search by clicking “Submit” at the bottom of the page.
  7. Choose your courses; the next screen lists all courses meeting your search parameters. Check the box next to each course section that you want to put on your “Preferred Sections” list.
  8. At the top of the next page, there are two buttons: “Narrow My Search” and “Resort My Results”. Neither refinement is very helpful. However if you want to re-sort classes alphabetically by faculty name instead of by course number, you can do so by clicking the down arrow on the Resort My Results field to find the sort you prefer. Highlight the preferred sort and click the “Submit” at the bottom of the page.
  9. Submit your choices to your “Preferred Sections” list by clicking “Submit” at the bottom of the page once you have made your course selections.
  10. Now you will be on the “Register and Drop Sections” page. At your appointment time, you will be able to register on this page. If this is not yet your appointment time, you should logout as you cannot complete your registration at this time. The sections you chose will still be listed when you come back at the appropriate time. If it is your appointment time, follow the instructions for “Register and Drop Sections” below.

Express Registration

  1. This is the quickest way to add courses to your "Preferred Sections" list. You need to know the exact subject, course and section number (ignore the synonym reference) of the sections (Example: LAW 100-E). You must choose the term (i.e. 08/FL = Law Fall 2008) for each of your courses. Click ASubmit@ on the bottom of the page.
  2. Now you will be on the "Register and Drop Sections" page. If it is not yet your appointment time, you should logout. The sections you chose will still be listed when you come back at the appointment day and time. If it is your appointment time, follow the instructions for "Register and Drop Sections" below.

Register and Drop Sections/Register for Previously Selected Sections

  1. When it is your appointed time to register, be sure to check the availability of the courses on your “Preferred Sections” list. If any of your classes are closed, you may add yourself to the waitlist or remove that course from your list. We recommend choosing the action for each of your courses (Register, Remove from List or Waitlist) rather than using the “ Action for all Preferred Sections” feature at the top of the page as you are limited to one class per semester for the first two priority Registration days. Do not choose courses that have time conflicts or courses for which you do not have the required pre-requisites or Instructor/Advisor consent; if you do, the process will fail and you will be returned to the “Register and Drop Sections” page.
  2. If you are adding a class with a pre-requisite and you have not taken the pre-requisite, you are required to add the pre-requisite class at the same time or before you add the class needing it.
  3. Once you have officially added a class you will be taken to the next page, "Registration Results". It has 3 parts. The first part shows the actions that were just completed. The second part shows everything that you are currently registered for (08/FL and 09/SL), and the third part shows courses that you are currently waitlisted for.
  4. After June 5, you may continue to add and drop courses online or make changes for both semesters until September 1. Fall semester on-line registration will continue through the first week of Fall Add/Drop, September 8. After this date, you must submit a completed Add/Drop Form in person, by fax 503-768-6850 or by email (lawreg@lclark.edu) to the Registrar’s Office. Spring on-line Add/Drop will resume on November 3, 2008 and continue through December 3, 2008. It will resume on-line from January 5, 2009 through January 19, 2009 After this date, all Add/Drop requests must be submitted to the Registrar’s office.

Manage My Waitlists

After June 4, you may add yourself to the waitlist for a course that is closed, and you:

  1. Can put yourself on the waitlist for multiple sections of a course (e.g. LAW 126-A and LAW 126-E).
  2. Can put yourself on the waitlist for a course that conflicts with a course for which you are already registered.
  3. Will be notified via LC email if a seat opens up in a section for which you are waitlisted. Fall waitlist notices will be start on August 3; spring waitlist notification will start November 3.
  4. Can register yourself into your waitlisted course once you have been notified that a seat is available (you have 3 days to register).
  5. Can drop other courses at the same time as you register for your waitlisted class until the end of the first week of Add/Drop (September 1 in the fall; January 19 in the spring). After that time students must submit an Add/Drop Form to the Registrar’s Office. You may submit the Add/Drop Form in person, or fax 503-768-6850. This form is available at our website at lawreg@lclark.edu.

Note: If you are given an invitation to add a class that is closed and this class conflicts in time with one currently on your schedule, you must drop the current class before adding the waitlist class.
