Professional Background
After graduation from Lewis & Clark Law School, Laurie Mapes was privileged to clerk for the Hon. Gus J. Solomon during his last years on the federal bench in Portland. Later she co-authored The First Duty, a history of the U.S. District Court of Oregon.
Mapes practiced real estate and land use law with a Portland firm and then joined Lewis & Clark Law School in 1987 as Director of Continuing Legal Education. She has served on the faculty off an on since 1990, teaching legal analysis and writing and civil procedure. She has been a mediator and arbitrator for the City of Portland, the Better Business Bureau, and the state court. Since 1993, Mapes has had a private practice in disability law, with emphasis on appeals within the Social Security Administration and in federal court.
