Lewis &\; Clark Law School is honored to host the Honorable Alex Kozinski as the sixth annual Distinguished Intellectual Property Visitor. Judge Kozinski will visit t he Law School from February 28 through March 2\, 2005\, to interact with students\, faculty and members of the bench and bar in a variety of setti ngs.
Judge Kozinski is a prolific writer and has delivered numero us speeches on a wide variety of issues\, including expert testimony afte r Daubert\, privacy in the workplace\, and copyright and trademark law. H is legal commentary has appeared in several national law journals\, inclu ding the Yale Law Journal\, Harvard Law Review\, Columbia Law Review\, an d Stanford Law Review. Judge Kozinski has also written a number of book r eviews and humorous essays\, appearing in such national publications as S late\, Forbes\, and The New York Times.
During nearly two decades on the Ninth Circuit\, Judge Kozinski has written important opinions–o ften for the court\, and sometimes in dissent–on intellectual property matters. His notable cases include Mattel\, Inc. V. MCA Records\, Inc. (2 002)\, rejecting Mattel's trademark infringement claim against Aqua\, a D anish band\, for its song "Barbie Girl"\; Micro Star v. FormGen Inc. (199 8)\, upholding FormGen's copyright infringement claim against Micro Star for distributing CD copies of "Duke Nukem 3D" player-authored game levels that had been posted on the Internet\; New Kids on the Block v. News Ame rica Publishing (1992)\, approving a fair use defense to the boy band's t rademark infringement claim against a newspaper's 900-number-based reader poll about the band\; and White v. Samsung Electronics America (1993)\, dissenting from the denial of en banc rehearing in a case that upheld Van na White's right-of-publicity claim against Samsung's use of a futuristic \, Vanna-like robot in an advertisement for VCRs. Given his great interes t in intellectual property law issues\, not to mention his avowed love fo r video games\, Judge Kozinski will doubtless continue to write influenti al copyright and trademark opinions for years to come.

Prior to joining the faculty at Boston University\, Dean O'Rourke wo rked on software licensing issues at IBM Corporation. \;
The intersection of intellectual property law and other fields\, such as cont ract law and antitrust\, have been her primary interest. \;
D ean O'Rourke is a prolific writer\, and her articles have appeared in the law reviews of Columbia\, Duke\, Iowa\, and Minnesota\, the technology j ournals of Berkeley\, Harvard\, and Boston University\, and other publica tions including the Journal of the Copyright Society. She also co-authore d the casebook Copyright in a Global Information Economy\, and lectures a t law schools around the globe. rty law. Professor Graeme Dinwoodie joined the Chicago-Kent faculty in 20
00 from the University of Cincinnati College of Law\, where he was a thre
e-time recipient of the Goldman Prize for Excellence in Teaching. He has
also taught as a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law
School. In 2001\, he was named a Norman and Edna Freehling Scholar\, and
he was elected to membership in the American Law Institute in 2003. Prof
essor Dinwoodie also holds a Chair in Intellectual Property Law at the Un
iversity of London\, Queen Mary College. \;
Prior to tea
ching\, Professor Dinwoodie had been an associate with Sullivan and Cromw
ell in New York\, concentrating in the practice of intellectual property
law and in commercial\, corporate\, and international litigation. Profess
or Dinwoodie holds a First Class Honors LL.B. degree in Private Law from
the University of Glasgow\, an LLM from Harvard Law School\, and a J.S.
D. from Columbia Law School. He was the Burton Fellow in residence at Col
umbia Law School for 1988-89\, working in the field of intellectual prope
rty law\, and a John F. Kennedy Scholar at Harvard Law School for 1987-88

He is the author of the casebooks International Int

al as our 2009 Distinguished Intellectual Property Visitor\, a program no
w celebrating its tenth year. Judge Leval is a United States Circuit Judg
e of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. At the time of his
appointment in 1993\, he was a United States District Court Judge in the
Southern District of New York. \;
Judge Leval received
his BA degree from Harvard College in 1959 and his JD degree magna cu
m laude in 1963 from the Harvard Law School\, where he served as Note Edi
tor of the Harvard Law Review. \;
Judge Leval served in
the U.S. Army in 1959. He was a law clerk for Judge Henry J. Friendly of
the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1963 until
1964. Judge Leval was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Souther
n District of New York from 1964 until 1968\, serving there as Chief Appe
llate Attorney from 1967 to 1968. From 1969 until 1975\, Judge Leval was
in private law practice as an associate and then a partner in the New Yor
k firm of Cleary\, Gottlieb\, Steen &\; Hamilton. He joined the New Yo
rk County District Attorney's Office in 1975\, where he served first as F
irst Assistant District Attorney\, and subsequently as Chief Assistant Di
strict Attorney. In 1977\, he was appointed to the United States District
Court for the Southern District of New York. \;

eval is a member of the Adjunct Faculty of the New York University School
of Law. He was awarded the Hillmon Memorial Fellowship by the University
of Wisconsin in 1988\; the Donald R. Brace Memorial Lectureship by the C

wship by Yale Law School in 1992\; the Melville Nimmer Lectureship by UCL

Lecture: "Crea tivity Effects"
Chris Sprigm an teaches intellectual property law\, antitrust law\, competition policy and comparative constitutional law. His scholarship focuses on how legal rules affect innovation and the deployment of new technologies.
Sprigman received his BA with honors from the University of Pennsylvani a in 1988. He attended the University of Chicago Law School\, serving as a comment editor of the University of Chicago Law Review and graduating w ith honors in 1993. Following graduation\, Sprigman clerked for Judge Ste phen Reinhardt of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit\, and f or Justice Lourens H. W. Ackermann of the Constitutional Court of South A frica. Sprigman also taught at the law school of the University of the Wi twatersrand\, in Johannesburg\, South Africa.
From 1999 to 2001\, Sprigman served as appellate counsel in the Antitrust Division of the U. S. Department of Justice\, where he worked on U.S. v. Microsoft\, among o ther matters. Sprigman then joined the Washington\, D.C.\, office of King &\; Spalding\, where he was elected a partner. In 2003\, he left law practice to become a Residential Fellow at the Center for Internet and So ciety at Stanford Law School. He joined the Virginia faculty in 2005.

Our continuing 2010-2011 workshop series feature s Associate Professor of Law Harry Surden\, University o f Colorado Law School.
Harry Surden joined the University of Colorado Law School faculty in 2008. His scholar ship centers upon intellectual property law with a substantive focus on p atents and copyright\, information privacy law\, and the application of c omputer technology within the legal system.
Prior to joining CU\, Professor Surden was a resident fellow at the Stanford Center for Comput ers and Law (CodeX) at Stanford Law School. In that capacity\, Professor Surden conducted interdisciplinary research with collaborators from the S tanford School of Engineering exploring the application of computer techn ology towards improving the legal system. He was also a member of the Sta nford Intellectual Property Litigation Clearinghouse and the director of the Computer Science and Law Initiative.
Professor Surden was law clerk to the Honorable Martin J. Jenkins of the United States District C ourt for the Northern District of California in San Francisco. He receive d his law degree from Stanford Law School with honors and was the recipie nt of the Stanford Law Intellectual Property Writing Award.
Prior to law school\, Professor Surden worked as a software engineer for Cisco Systems and Bloomberg L.P. He received his undergraduate degree with hon ors from Cornell University.

About Judge Timothy B. Dyk
Judge Timothy B. Dyk joined the United States Court of Appeals f
or the Federal Circuit in 2000. He has authored many notable opinions in
patent and trademark law\, such as in International Seaway Trading Co
rp. v. Walgreens Corp. (2009) and In re Spirits International (2009). He is especially well known for learned concurring opinions th
at more deeply explore the historical and doctrinal contexts of core pate
nt law issues\, such as in In re Bilski (2008) and Johnson &

Annemarie Bridy teaches Contracts\, Copyrights\, Introduction to Intellectual Property\, and Cyberspace Law. In 2009\, she received the College of Law's William F. and Joan L. Boyd Award for Teac hing Excellence and the University of Idaho's Alumni Award for Faculty Ex cellence. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the Association o f American Law Schools (AALS) Internet and Computer Law Section. Her scho larly work focuses on Internet and intellectual property law\, with speci fic attention to the impact of disruptive technologies on existing framew orks for the protection of intellectual property and the enforcement of i ntellectual property rights. Previously\, she held the positions of Policy Planning Adviser to the Register\, Acting General Counsel\, Chief of both the Examining and Information and Reference Divisions\, Senior Attorney\, Office of the Gen eral Counsel\, Music Examiner. \;From 1989 -1990\, she served as Con sultant in Copyright Law\, for the World Intellectual Property Organizati on\, Geneva.
Peters is a frequent speaker on copyright issues. &# 160\;She delivered the 2004 Brace Memorial Lecture (at New York Universit y School of Law)\, the 1996 Horace S. Manages Lecture at Columbia Univers ity School of Law\, the 2009 Reed-Elsevier-Suffolk Law School annual lect ure\, and in 2010 the annual Finnegan lecture at American University's Wa shington College of Law. \; She also is the author of The General Guide to the Copyright Act of 1976.
Peters has received num erous awards for her work as Register of Copyrights. \;They include: The AIPLA's 2006 Excellence Award\, MIP 2010 North American Outstanding Lawyer's Achievement Award\, the DC Bar Association's 2010 IP Champion Aw ard\, the Library of Congress's Distinguished Achievement Award\, the 200 5 Jefferson Medal\, awarded by the New Jersey Intellectual Property Law A ssociation\, for exceptional contributions in the field of intellectual p roperty\; the 2004 Cyber Champion Award presented by the Business Softwar e Alliance\, for exceptional contributions in the field of computer law\; the 2003 Computer Law Association Past President's Award for distinguish ed service to information technology lawyers throughout the world\, the W omen in Music 1999 Touchstone Award\, for legislative contributions that brought significant benefit to those in music\; as well as awards from &# 160\;the American Society of Media Photographers\, the Graphic Artists Gu ild\, and the Music Publishers Association. \;Peters is a member of The Copyright Society of the U.S.A.\, the Intellectual Property Section o f the American Bar Association\, the U.S. Chapter of the Association litt eraire et artistique internationale (ALAI)\, the American Intellectual Pr operty Law Association (AIPLA) and the International Technology Law Assoc iation. \;From 1986 to 1995 she was a lecturer in the Communications Law Institute of The Catholic University of America's law school and pre viously served as adjunct professor of copyright law at The University of Miami School of Law and at The Georgetown University Law Center.

Dan L. Burk is Chancellor's Professor of La w at the University of California\, Irvine\, where he is a founding membe r of the law faculty. \; An internationally prominent authority on is sues related to high technology\, he lectures\, teaches\, and writes in t he areas of patent\, copyright\, electronic commerce\, and biotechnology law. \; He is the author of numerous papers on the legal and societal impact of new technologies\, including articles on scientific misconduct \, on the regulation of biotechnology\, and on the intellectual property implications of global computer networks.
Professor Burk holds a BS in Microbiology (1985) from Brigham Young University\, an M.S. in Mo lecular Biology and Biochemistry (1987) from Northwestern University\, a JD (1990) from Arizona State University\, and a J.S.M. (1994) from Stan ford University.
Prior to joining the faculty at UC Irvine\, he t aught at the University of Minnesota. \; He has served as a legal adv isor to a variety of private\, governmental\, and intergovernmental organ izations\, including the American Civil Liberties Union Committee on Pate nt Policy and the OECD Committee on Consumer Protection.

Profess or Stacey Dogan is a leading scholar in intellectual property and competi tion law. \; She has written many articles on the application of trad emark and copyright law to the online environment\, with a particular emp hasis on the role of intermediaries such as Napster and Google.
P rofessor Dogan has presented her research at numerous national and intern ational conferences\, and her writings have appeared in journals includin g the Stanford Law Review\, Emory Law Journal\, Iowa Law Review and Texas Law Review. In the fall of 2008\, she became the co-editor-in-chief of t he Journal of the Copyright Society\, a peer-reviewed copyright journal.& #160\; She is also the incoming chair of the Intellectual Property Sectio n of the Association of American Law Schools. \; \; She is an act ive participant in educational programs with the local bar\, leading semi nars and discussions for the Boston Bar Association\, Massachusetts Conti nuing Legal Education and the Massachusetts Volunteer Lawyers for the Art s. She has also participated in executive training sessions through the N ortheastern University high-technology MBA program.
Before joinin g the BU faculty\, Professor Dogan taught for over a decade at Northeaste rn University School of Law\, where she focused on intellectual property and antitrust law. Professor Zahr Said joins us as an Assistant Professor. \;She comes to us after completing a stint as a visiting professor at the University of Virginia School of Law. Zah r earned her BA from UC Berkeley (magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa)\, her JD from Columbia (where she served as Articles Editor for the Colu mbia Journal of Law and the Arts\, and was a Kent Scholar) and a PhD in comparative literature from Harvard University.
She will tea ch Torts in Fall/Winter 2011-12\, co-teach IP Core in the Fall\, and will teach IP Innovations in the Fall.
K evin Emerson Collins is a Professor of Law at Washington University Schoo l of Law in St. Louis\, MO. He is a well known patent scholar who frequen tly uses an interdisciplinary lens to shed new light on patent law. For e xample\, he has explored how the philosophy of language explains the reac h of patent rights into after-arising technology\; how semiotics facilita tes the reconceptualization of the long-standing\, yet poorly understood "printed matter doctrine" of patent law\; and how the philosophy of mind offers insights into the economics of allowing newly invented human thoug ht to be eligible for patent protection. A licensed architect\, Professor Collins is also interested in pioneering the field of "law and architect ure"—the study of how the built environment ("architecture") affects in dividual and group behavior and how\, in turn\, law might opt to regulate the construction of the built environment to harness its behavior-sculpt ing capacity—in the legal academy.
Before law school\, Professo r Collins earned a bachelor's degree in molecular biophysics and biochemi stry from Yale College and a master's degree in Architecture from Columbi a University. He then worked as a lead designer and project architect for Bernard Tschumi Architects of New York City and Paris\, France. After ea rning his law degree\, he clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia So tomayor\, while she served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Ci rcuit in New York City\, and for the Hon. Raymond C. Clevenger on the Fed eral Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington\, D.C.

Professor Le e teaches international intellectual property law\, copyright law\, and t rademark law. He joined IIT Chicago-Kent's faculty in 2010 as a professor of law and director of the Program in Intellectual Property Law.
Professor Lee's r esearch focuses on the ways in which the Internet\, technological develop ment\, and globalization challenge existing legal paradigms. He also writ es extensively about the Framers' understanding of the Free Press Clause as a limit on using the Copyright Clause to restrict technologies. In add ition to numerous articles\, he co-authored a leading casebook with Danie l Chow titled International Intellectual Property: Problems\, Cases\, and Materials (West Group 2006).
Previously\, Professor Lee was a le gal writing instructor at Stanford Law School and an attorney at Stanford 's Center for Internet and Society\, where he supervised students involve d in public interest litigation related to law and technology and the Int ernet. From 1996 to 1999\, Professor Lee was a litigation associate in th e Washington\, D.C.\, office of Mayer\, Brown &\; Platt\, working at a ll levels of trial and appellate litigation\, including cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. Immediately following law school\, he clerked for the Honorable John T. Noonan Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Professor Lee is currently writing a book\, The New Free Speech\, which analyzes how the Internet shapes people's understanding of free speech\, as evidenced in the mass protests to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) a nd the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).
Professor Lee is a 1995 cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School\, where he was an edit or and co-chair of the books and commentaries office of the \;Harvard Law Review. In 1992\, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude fr om Williams College with a bachelor's degree in philosophy (highest honor s) and classics.
Mol ly Shaffer Van Houweling is Professor of Law at the University of Califor nia\, Berkeley\, where she also serves as one of the Faculty Directors of the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology. She joined the Berkeley Law faculty in 2005 after starting her law teaching career at the University of Michigan. Professor Van Houweling's teaching and research interests in clude intellectual property\, law and technology\, and property doctrine and theory.
Before entering academia\, Professor Van Houweling wa s President of Creative Commons\, a nonprofit organization that facilitat es sharing of intellectual property. She has also served as Senior Advise r to the President and Board of Directors of ICANN\, the entity that over sees the Internet Domain Name System. She has been a research fellow at t he Berkman Center for Internet &\; Society at Harvard Law School and a t the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School. Professor V an Houweling served as a law clerk for Judge Michael Boudin of the U.S. C ourt of Appeals for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and J ustice David H. Souter of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Professor Van H ouweling received her BA from the University of Michigan (1994) and her JD from Harvard Law School (1998). She currently serves on a committee of the National Academies on the Impact of Copyright Policy on Innovatio n in the Digital Era and on the Commission on the Future of the UC Berkel ey Library.
Professor Vacca will be showcasing his most recent article on the work-made-for-hire doctrine in copyright law\, which was selected as the winner of the University of Houston's IPIL Spo nsored Scholarship Grant for the Legal Academy.

In 2014\, he will be a di stinguished visitor to the University of Toronto. He has authored several important publications including: Intellectual Property (with Brad Sherm an\, 4th ed forthcoming)\; The Making of Modern Intellectual Property Law – The British Experience\, 1760-1911 (with Brad Sherman)\; Between a R ock and a Hard Place: The Problems Facing Freelance Creators in the UK Me dia Market-Place\; and Gurry on Breach of Confidence: The Law of Trade Se crets and Confidentiality (with Tanya Aplin\, Phill Johnson and Simon Mal ynicz). Professor Bently was a member of the 'Wittem Group' – a group o f European Copyright scholars working on a European Copyright Codem and w as a member of the Copyright Expert Panel of the (now defunct) Strategic advisory Board on intellectual Property. He is founding co-director of IS HTIP\, the international society for the History and theory of Intellectu al Property As an academic\, he has given expert advice on UK intellectua l property law to firms and courts in Germany\, the Netherlands\, Canada\ , Brazil and the United States.

Peter Lee graduated from Yale Law Schoo l\, where he was a member of The Yale Law Journal and a student director of the international human rights clinic. He joined the King Hall faculty after clerking for Judge Barry G. Silverman of the Ninth Circuit Court o f Appeals. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University\, where he studied the history and philosophy of science. Professor Lee ex amines the intersection of science and society in his legal research\, wh ich explores the patent system's impact on scientific and technological p rogress. In a related vein\, Professor Lee's work has also addressed the broader question of how intellectual property affects the creation and di ssemination of ideas.
Professor Lee's academic interests also inc lude public international law\, economic development\, and globalization. He has pursued those interests in positions at the U.S. State Department \, the World Health Organization\, the United Nations Development Program \, and the Korean Delegation to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The East Asian Studies Program and the Art Department are co-sponsoring a lecture with Winnie Wong. Dr. Wong's r esearch is concerned with the history and present of artistic authorship\ , with a focus on interactions between China and the West. Her theoretica l interests revolve around the critical distinctions of high and low\, tr ue and fake\, art and commodity\, originality and imitation\, and\, conce ptual and manual labor\, and thus my work focuses on objects and practice s at the boundary of these categories. I have written on product placemen t in the Hollywood film industry\, popular culture and public space in po stcolonial Hong Kong\, performance art and consumer rights activism in 19 90s Beijing\, and American trademark law and experience design. More rece ntly\, my work has focused on image-making practices at the heart of mode rn and contemporary encounters between China and the West. \;

Judge Denise Cote was appointed United States District Ju dge for the Southern District of New York on August 10\, 1994. \;Jud ge Cote has held positions in both the private and public sectors. \; For approximately eight years\, beginning in 1977\, she was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division of the United States Att orney's Office for the Southern District of New York. She left that offic e as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division in 1985 to join the law firm o f Kaye\, Scholer\, Fierman\, Hays &\; Handler. \; In 1991\, she re turned to the United States Attorney's Office as the first woman Chief of the Criminal Division\, a post she held when Senator Daniel Patrick Moyn ihan recommended her to President Clinton for appointment as a federal Ju dge. Rich Roberson\, L&\;C Class of 200 9\, is Senior Patent Counsel for Adidas Group. Rich began working in the legal department at Adidas during his third year of law school. He now ma nages all patent related work generated out of Portland including patent litigation and prosecution\, patent clearance\, patent license negotiatio n\, and legal issues involving new technology.
Prior to working f or Adidas\, Rich worked as an engineer for Freightliner LLC and with the Department of the Navy. As General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for Creative Commons\, Diane P eters directs the organization's legal strategy\, affairs and projects\, and oversees CC's legal staff. Professor Manta teaches in tellectual property and property law subjects at the Maurice A. Deane Sch ool of Law at Hofstra University\, where she also serves as the director of the Center for Intellectual Property Law (CIPL). \; Her researches examines the intersection between intellectual property and social scien ce\, with a focus on psychology. \; She has written on topics such as the hedonic value of trademarks and its legal implications\, the problem of cognitive bias in copyright infringement litigation\, and the role cr iminal sanctions in intellectual property. \; She is the co-author of a textbook on criminal sanctions in intellectual property.

Professor Manta was previously an Assistant Professor of Law a t the Case Western Reserve University School of Law. \; She was a Big elow Teaching Fellow and Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago Law School from 2007 to 2009. \; Professor Manta has also served on the faculties of the Fordham University School of Law\, Brooklyn Law School\, The George Washington University School of Law\, and the University of A rkansas at Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law. \;
