Diane J. Humetewa

Diane Humetewa  is of Counsel in the Federal Indian Law Section of the law firm of Squire, Sanders and Dempsey LLP.  Formerly, Diane  was the United States Attorney for the District of Arizona, serving in that position from December 2007 to August 2009.  Ms. Humetewa received her law degree in 1993 from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University.  A member of the Hopi tribe, Ms. Humetewa is the first Native American woman to serve as a U.S. Attorney .  Previously  Diane was an Assistant U.S. Attorney handling civil and criminal matters.  She went on to serve as the Tribal Liaison and Senior Litigation Counsel , including acting as supervisor for the office’s Victim Witness Program. Diane began her public service career as one of the first victim advocates in the federal criminal justice system when she was hired to establish a Victim Witness Program for the Arizona U.S. Attorney’s Office.  That program later served as a model for offices with similar jurisdictions across the nation. Ms. Humetewa is considered a national expert on Native American legal issues and has instructed law enforcement and prosecutors. She has served an Appellate Court judge  for the Hopi Tribe and as an ad hoc member of the Native American Subcommittee of the U.S. Sentencing Commission.
