My name is Melissa and I am from Hollister, CA.  I attended University of Nevada Reno (class of 2010) and double-majored in English Writing and Political Science with a minor in Religious Studies.  I enjoy swimming, hiking, playing with my dog, and traveling.  Something not many people know about me is that I usually give a fake name when making reservations at restaurants or ordering at coffee shops.  The motto I live by is: “Be happy, life is a tragically short misadventure.”  My goal in SBA is to make sure the courses that students need to get their natural resources certificate are available, and just as importantly the classes students want to take are available. Also, I’d like to keep our students involved in sustainability efforts on campus and in their own lives. I’d love to start a “sustainability week” each semester where students can get hands on information on how to start their own composting efforts, how to start a garden, how to do your own bike repairs, how to get proper nutrition from vegan/vegetarian fare, guide to houseplants, sustainable gift guide, etc. I think by having a day or two (or even a week!) that actively showed students how to be more environmentally friendly instead of just talking about it would serve everyone a lot of good. We have a lot of passionate people on campus; it would be great to give them more hands-on direction on how to apply that passion.
