2000

Lisa Alan JD graduated from the Art of Leadership, a board training program presented by Business for Culture and the Arts. Alan is an associate with Stoel Rives in Portland.

Brett Brownscombe JD works in the Oregon governor’s office as deputy natural resource policy advisor. He focuses on state, local, and federal issues related to forest management, fish and wildlife, water, and parks and recreation.

David Fennell JD wrote a screenplay, COIN, based on the true story of a specialized Marine unit struggling to find a black-and-white purpose to a very gray war in Afghanistan. Fennell is a major in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and has served in two combat missions. He is also the founder of Law Q, a recruiting, staffing, and employment service company located in Denver.

Sarah Griffith BA is an assistant professor of history at Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina. She teaches courses in Asian American and U.S. immigration history.

Román Hernández JD was named by Portland Daily Journal of Commerce as one of the Up & Coming Lawyers of 2010. He also received the Leaders Award for Outstanding Professional Organization Involvement. Hernández is a shareholder with Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt and is immediate past president of the Hispanic National Bar Association.

Kathleen Profitt BA, JD ’03 practices homeowners association law and construction defect law at Barker Martin P.S. in Portland. See also Births, p. 39.

Carrie Richter JD was named by Portland Daily Journal of Commerce as one of the Up & Coming Lawyers of 2010. A partner at Garvey Schubert Barer, Richter has successfully argued cases before Oregon’s Land Use Board of Appeals, the Oregon Supreme Court, and Court of Appeals. She acts as deputy city attorney for Oregon City.

Alexa Schmidt BA teaches English as a second language at the middle and high school levels in Burlington, Vermont. She works with refugees from more than a dozen countries. Beginning in January, she will be teaching English on a Fulbright in Bangladesh.

Trung Tu JD was named by Portland Daily Journal of Commerce as one of the Up & Coming Lawyers of 2010. Tu, a partner at McEwen Gisvold, is a litigation and appellate attorney with experience in commercial, business, corporate, and real estate law; legal malpractice defense and repair; employment law; and simple estate planning. Before joining McEwen Gisvold, he was a senior staff attorney with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He speaks Vietnamese.

2001

Justin Sawyer JD was named by Portland Daily Journal of Commerce as one of the Up & Coming Lawyers of 2010. Sawyer is a partner in the litigation department at Miller Nash and chairs the firm’s pro bono committee.

2002

Bill Allen BA left his job as a consumer finance manager in 2009 and went back to school to earn an MAT “This past year I have been substitute teaching in the Portland area while coaching baseball,” he says. “One year ago, our daughter, Alivia, was born.”

2003

Justin Leonard JD was named by Portland Daily Journal of Commerce as one of the Up & Coming Lawyers of 2010. He is an associate at Ball Janik and specializes in bankruptcy and debtor-creditor rights.

Chris Lombard JD joined Lewis & Clark Law School’s Office of Career Services as associate director. Lombard worked at Syracuse University College of Law as an associate director in their career services office. Earlier, he was in private practice, served as a staff attorney at Portland State University, and worked as a legal editor for a publisher.

Josh Ross JD was named by Portland Daily Journal of Commerce as one of the Up & Coming Lawyers of 2010. Ross, an associate at Stoll Berne, is a litigator who concentrates on complex business matters, consumer and securities issues, class actions, and contract disputes.

Lindsay Suttin BA moved to Madison, Wisconsin, and is the executive assistant to the president of Saris Cycling Group, a manufacturer of bikes, racks, and the CycleOps Power Tap (a device that provides real-time cycling performance measurements). See also Marriages, p. 39.

2004

Daniel Del Coro BA lives in Jersey City, New Jersey, and is pursuing a master’s degree in food studies at New York University. As New York city’s account director for Fossil Farms, he works with local farmers to provide sustainable, all-natural farm-raised wild game and heritage-breed meats to chefs and restaurants throughout the city.

Dan Eller JD is a member of the board of trustees of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Oregon and Southwest Washington, Idaho, and Montana. Eller is an attorney at Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt in Portland. He focuses his practice in the areas of tax and business law and advises clients with both transactional and controversy matters.

Monique Leslie BA earned a master’s degree in environmental management from Portland State University in August 2011.

Parker Lewis BA had his first “real” crossword puzzle published in the August 10, 2011, edition of the New York Times. For an article about the puzzle and Parker, click here.

Marlene Rocio Yesquen JD was appointed to serve on the Medford School Board. Yesquen is an attorney with Black Chapman Webber & Stevens in Medford. She is a member of the district’s Latino Advisory Committee, the board of the Community Health Center, and the Hispanic Interagency Committee. She also is a member of Medford’s Budget Committee and its Housing and Community Development Commission. In addition, she is a member of the Medford Chamber Latino Network.

2005

Ashlee Albies JD was honored with the Law for the People Award by the National Lawyers Guild. She and six other attorneys were recognized for their team’s victory in Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation v. Obama. As a result of the decision, Chief Judge Vaughn Walker of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California declared that the warrantless wiretapping program initiated by the Bush administration was illegal.

2006

Ian Boisvert JD, a renewable energy attorney from San Francisco, received an Ian Axford Fellowship in Public Policy for seven months of study in New Zealand, which he completed in August 2011. He was based at the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority to assist in the development of a New Zealand–specific regime for the deployment of wave, tidal, and offshore wind energy devices. His policy report, “Lifting the Looking Glass: Tradable Occupation Could Facilitate Ocean Renewable Energy in New Zealand,” was published at the end of his fellowship.

Chloe Castro BA recently returned to the States from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Hong Kong to pursue an MFA in historic preservation.

Elisa Dozono JD was named by Portland Daily Journal of Commerce as one of the Up & Coming Lawyers of 2010. She also received the Leaders Award for Outstanding Professional Organization Involvement. Dozono is an attorney with Miller Nash in Portland.

Ben Waterhouse BA was one of 21 journalists awarded a fellowship by the National Endowment of the Arts Journalism Institute in Theater and Musical Theater. He participated in an intensive program at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism in June 2011.

2007

Arts & Sciences Reunion June 21-24, 2012

Monique Hawthorne JD was named by Portland Daily Journal of Commerce as one of the Up & Coming Lawyers of 2010. Hawthorne is an attorney with Davis Wright Tremaine in Portland and is passionate about sustainable design and construction. She is certified in the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED green-building rating program and helped build the first Passive House (a super energy-efficient structure) in Portland with her husband.

Averi Lohss BA is completing her fourth and final year of eurhythmy movement training in New York. After completing the program, she plans to study the therapeutic aspects of this art form. She hopes to teach in a Waldorf School or work therapeutically with an anthroposophic doctor.

Ellen Van Voorhees BA moved to the Los Angeles area to pursue a master’s degree at the Talbot School of Theology at Biola University. She hopes to spend summer 2012 in Israel learning biblical Hebrew and traveling to historical sites in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey.

2008

Eric Atcheson BA earned his master of divinity degree from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California, in 2011. In June, he was ordained into the ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at Saint Andrew Christian Church in Olathe, Kansas. Robert Kugler BA ’79, Paul S. Wright Professor of Christian Studies and director of strategic initiatives, preached at the ordination service. Atcheson is writing a master’s thesis in biblical studies at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University while he searches for a pastorate to serve.

Charles “Anthony” Burrell JD was elected to the board of directors of Pendulum Aerial Arts, a nonprofit that exposes area youth and other members of the public to a unique form of moving art through live performance. Burrell is an associate in the Portland office of Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt.

Nicolia Eldred-Skemp BA moved to New York City in June 2011 to pursue an M.P.H. in epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. She previously did work on the Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative at Oregon Health & Science University. She was involved with child health quality measurements and data projects for the Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health.

Jessica Shoup JD was honored in the 2010 issue of Oregon Super Lawyers’ Magazine as a Rising Star. As an associate with the law firm of Greene & Markley, she concentrates her practice in federal, state, and local tax controversies, including tax audits, offers in compromise, and tax collection matters.

C.J. Strauss MA has opened Bloom Counseling in the Portland Wellness Center. She also continues to see clients at William Temple House and serves on the executive board of the Oregon Counseling Association. Strauss is grateful to Lewis & Clark for providing her with a solid grounding in counseling care and inspiration for community mental health.

Joshua Wheeler B.A. has been teaching English in northeastern Japan (Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture) for two years. He survived the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. Despite ongoing aftershocks, power outages, and food and supply shortages, he renewed his contract to continue teaching and assist survivors in rebuilding their lives.

2009

Brooklyn Baggett JD was appointed to the board of directors for KZME Radio. She serves on the Metro East board, helping the radio station find local venues and bands during its fundraising efforts. Baggett is a local entertainment attorney in Portland, focusing in the areas of intellectual property, business, employment, and arts and entertainment law. An avid (and published) photographer for local musicians and performers, she is professionally involved with the local music industry and the arts. Baggett also runs a local music business, Octopus Entertainment, dedicated to Portland musicians.

Andrew Logan Beveridge JD was elected alderperson for the First District of Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

Micheline D’Angelis JD wrote a paper titled “Brazil, Indigenous Peoples, and the International Law of Discovery” with Robert J. Miller, professor of law. She researched and translated the Portuguese language materials used in the article. D’Angelis was born in Brazil and moved to the United States in 1999.

Calon Russell JD graduated from the Art of Leadership, a board training program presented by Business for Culture and the Arts. Russell is an associate with Hinshaw & Culbertson in Portland. Zack Yeager BA took a first place overall finish in the 2011 June Lake [California] Triathlon. Most of this grueling event takes place at an elevation of 7,600 feet.
