ALDF Offers Scholarships for Summer Intensive Animal Law Program

Interested in attending the Summer Intensive Animal Law Program at Lewis & Clark? The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) Advancement of Animal Law Summer Scholarships are available to law student members of our student chapters and will be awarded based upon demonstrated commitment to ALDF’s mission, “to advance the interests and protect the lives of animals through the legal system.”

Applicants should be committed to the advancement of animal law through active involvement with their Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF) chapter while in law school and anticipated participation in the field after graduation. Scholarships will cover partial or full tuition for one summer course. The application deadline is May 25, 2012.

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Applicant must be a member of an active SALDF chapter.
• Applicant must demonstrate outstanding commitment to animal law.

Applicants must submit:

• A copy of your most recent résumé, including two professional or academic references. 
• Provide complete answers to the following questions. There is no page limit. Answers must be typed and double spaced. Include your name, SALDF chapter, year in school, address, phone number, and email address.
  
  1. Describe your role within your SALDF chapter.
  2. Describe any other animal law or animal protection activities and experience (academic, volunteer, activism, employment, etc.) to date.
  3. Describe how you see yourself contributing to ALDF’s mission, and tell us how you will support the field of animal law after graduation.
  4. Describe your financial need and list which course(es) you plan to take this summer.

Summer Intensive Animal Law Program at Lewis & Clark Law School

Spend your summer in beautiful Portland, Oregon while studying with some of the best animal law professors and earning credit towards your Juris Doctorate. The Center for Animal Law Studies at Lewis & Clark, in collaboration with the Animal Legal Defense Fund, has the only Summer Intensive Animal Law Program.  This summer the program features four different two-credit classes: International Wildlife Law (Professor David Favre); Animal Law Litigation (Professors Carter Dillard & Matthew Liebman); Animal Rights Law & Jurisprudence (Professor Steven Wise); and Law of Humane Science (Professor Paul Locke).

Lewis & Clark’s Animal Law Program is all-inclusive, welcoming all perspectives regarding animal protection issues. The summer program is open to law students in good standing at any ABA-approved law school, practitioners, and qualified graduate students and legal assistants. Please note, visiting students must supply a letter of good standing from their home institution prior to the first day of class, and legal assistants without a bachelor’s degree must provide a letter from their employer confirming they work as legal assistants.

It is best to register for summer classes as soon as possible to guarantee a seat. If space is available, applications for courses may be accepted up to the first day of class, but classes do fill up.
