2012 National Day of Remembrance

September 25 is the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims. On the National Day of Remembrance we as a nation, state, and community recognize the devastating impact of homicide on our families, friends and nation as a whole. We also recognize and respect the rights of the loved ones of murder victims and renew our commitment to fighting for these rights.
In the past year NCVLI has provided legal technical assistance in 10 cases involving homicide and submitted amicus briefs in 5 cases involving homicide. From ensuring that compensation is provided to cover funeral costs to fighting for family members’ right to be present in the courtroom during trial, we are deeply committed to ensuring that the victim experience in the criminal justice system helps rather than impedes the path of healing.
For many years NCVLI has partnered with the local Oregon and SW Washington chapter of Parents of Murdered Children (POMC) to facilitate an in-person remembrance ceremony. Once again this year we will be attending this event and assisting in reading aloud the names of homicide victims.

This year, the National Organization of POMC has joined together with the National SAVIN (Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification) Training and Technical Assistance Project to promote 2012 National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims (NDoR) on September 25th. The goal of the National SAVIN Project is to increase public safety and improve basic justice decisions by ensuring that victims are given timely and accurate notification. The Project is sponsored by the National Criminal Justice Association with support from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice.
POMC and SAVIN have partnered to provide the 2012 National Day of Remembrance SAVIN Resource Kit featuring resources for victim outreach and public awareness; current homicide statistics; and camera-ready artwork for a bookmark and buttons.
This Resource Kit has been provided to SAVIN Program Administrators in states that sponsor SAVIN to help them promote SAVIN to homicide family survivors on September 25th and throughout the year. They welcome the opportunity to partner with their state and local chapters on this important effort.
