Starr Ahrens BA wrote and directed three tragicomedy playlets—The Free and the Brave, Fat Tiff, and Jesus and Superman—at Portland’s ComedySportz in fall 2013.

Robert Childs BA ran the advocacy campaigns of two progressive health bills that were signed into law in North Carolina. House Bill 850 partially decriminalized syringes. Senate Bill 20 decriminalized possession of drugs and alcohol during overdoses (so that people are not afraid to call 911) and made the antidote to opioid overdoses (Naloxone) more available for community use.

Román Hernández JD received the 2013 Paul J. De Muniz Professionalism Award from the Oregon Hispanic Bar Association. He was also appointed to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Portland branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Hernández is a shareholder with Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt. He specializes in the areas of employment law, labor law, and business litigation.

Kevin Minoli JD joined the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of General Counsel to serve as the acting principal deputy general counsel. Principal deputy is the most senior career attorney position at the EPA and is essentially the equivalent of managing partner at a law firm.

Alex Reagan BA was one of six Lewis & Clark alumni who were part of the Liminal Performance Group’s production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town last fall in Portland. He played Mr. Webb.

Trung Tu JD was inducted as the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association Northwest Regional Governor at the association’s national convention in Washington, D.C. Tu received the Community Leadership Award from the Oregon Area Jewish Committee in June 2013. He is a partner with McEwen Gisvold, where he specializes in business litigation, legal malpractice defense, and employment law.

Jeremy Aliason JD was selected president of the newly established Seminole Nation Bar Association. A member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, Aliason grew up in Oklahoma City and is a member of the Nurcup Harjo band. He serves on the board of directors for College Horizons, a program dedicated to helping Native Americans pursue higher education.

Anne Kunkel JD was elected president of CREW Idaho, a business networking organization that supports women in commercial real estate. A founding member, she also serves on the organization’s board of directors. Kunkel is a partner with the Boise law firm of Givens Pursley. Her practice focuses on complex real estate, business, and asset transactions.

Caroline Lobdell JD is the recipient of the 2012 Service to Agriculture Award by Oregon Women for Agriculture. She was awarded the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association Top Industry Promoter Award. Appointed to the Oregon State Bar Agricultural Law Section Executive Committee and the Oregon State Bar Administrative Law Section Executive Committee, Lobdell serves as the executive director of the Western Resources Legal Center, a nonprofit legal education program affiliated with Lewis & Clark. She joined Lewis & Clark Law School’s Board of Visitors in 2013.

Justin Sawyer JD was named by the Portland Business Journal as one of its 40 Under 40 Executives for 2013. Sawyer is a partner in the litigation department of Miller Nash in Portland.

2003

David Coulter BA received an Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium internship plus a $7,000 scholarship at Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. He is involved in a project titled “Mathematical Taxonomy for Ocean Phytoplankton,” a genetic programming effort in which he will be taking models of phytoplankton ecosystems and maniupulating them using genetic programming techniques to create new ecosystem models.

Paige Davis JD was named a 2013 Washington Rising Star by Super Lawyers magazine. Davis is a shareholder with Lane Powell in Seattle. She concentrates her practice on cross-border tax and business planning for U.S. and foreign entities.

Jered Gorman BA has been recognized for using Instagram to showcase his “Puddlegram” photography. He describes Instagram as “both an art form and a method of communication.” He adds, “For the first time in history, most people walking this Earth have a device in their pockets that can capture a moment in time, then transmit the image, the vision of one individual, to a global audience.”

Jonas Lerman BA recently moved to Washington, D.C., where he works as an attorney in the State Department. See also Births.

Arts & Sciences Reunion

Anna-Marie Josue BA and her sister, Michelle, successfully raised $38,166 (with a starting goal of $25,000) from 345 backers on Kickstarter to fund Matt Shepard Is a Friend of Mine. The film “explores the life and death of Matthew Shepard and examines the wreckage left behind after his murder.”

Geoff Tichenor JD was named by the Portland Business Journal as one of its 40 Under 40 Executives for 2013. Tichenor, a partner at Stoel Rives in Portland, counsels clients facing environmental enforcement actions and complex permitting and compliance questions.

Diana Wiener Rosengard BA, JD ’09 left a position in insurance defense litigation with Liberty Mutual for a position at Acquia, an open-source tech firm in Portland. In her free time, Rosengard has also recently finished her first young adult novel and is currently seeking representation. Meanwhile, her husband, David Rosengard, has moved from the Lewis & Clark area coordinator’s apartment in Forest Hall to a library cubicle at Lewis & Clark Law School. He has completed his first year of study focusing on animal law. They live in Southwest Portland with their four cats.

Whitney Yazzolino JD and Julie Lohuis of Yazzolino, Lohuis & Edgel are corecipients of the 2013 Senior Law Project (SLP) Volunteer of the Year Award. In addition to staffing Portland’s Hollywood neighborhood clinic on a monthly basis, each attorney takes direct referrals from homebound clients who are unable to make it to the SLP clinic. Yazzolino started volunteering with the SLP in 2009 and has helped more than 66 clients.

Sharl Azar BA began her fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at Oregon Health & Science University and the Portland VA Medical Center.

Brendan Hieber CAS is working for La Casa de Panchita, a Peruvian NGO. He helps educate child domestic laborers and enhance quality of life conditions in the shantytowns of Lima. Hieber is raising funds to benefit a center for child domestic laborers, a project which he started; for more information, visit www.globalgiving.com. Hieber studied at Lewis & Clark for three years and feels it is the school where he learned how to think about the world.

Boris Todorov BA received his PhD in clinical psychology from Ohio University in December 2013.

Teka Lamade JD received the Alaska Bar Association’s 2013 Solo Practitioner Pro Bono Award. She was recognized for her work through the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, which assists victims with matters such as protection orders, divorce, paternity, probate, and bankruptcy. Previously a staff attorney for the Sitka Tribe of Alaska, Lamade started her own practice in Sitka in 2012.

Hunter Franks BA works as a “creative placemaker” in San Francisco. Among other projects, he has a current participatory art project, Map Your Desk, which anyone can participate in by visiting http://mapyourdesk.tumblr.com/participate.

Nathanael Massey BA, a ClimateWire reporter, was featured as a guest expert on C-SPAN in June 2013 to talk about the federal government’s role in fighting wildfires and about the death of 19 members of a firefighting crew in Arizona.

Julia Crager BA has embarked on her first musical tour under the name Julia Lucille. She will be touring 14 states, covering much of the West and South. You can follow her progress at http://julialucille.tumblr.com. She released her third album, Homing, in December 2012.

Katie Jeremiah JD was named one of Engineering News-Record’s Top 20 Under 40 for her work in design and construction. Jeremiah has a degree in construction engineering management and worked in construction for five years before earning her JD Her practice at Jordan Ramis focuses on construction law, environmental law, mine safety and health administration, and sustainability law.

Gail Shibley JD is the chief of staff for Portland Mayor Charlie Hales.

2010

Kelsey Chapple BA was awarded the ninth Equal Justice Scholarship by the University of Texas School of Law, which covers tuition and fees for three years of legal study. After law school, Chapple has agreed to work for three years to provide direct legal services to low-income individuals or groups at a U.S. nonprofit organization.

Andrew Ginis JD is corecipient of the 2013 Young Lawyers Section (YLS) of Multnomah Bar Association Award of Merit. Ginis is a member of and an active contributor to the YLS Pro Bono Committee.

Haben Girma BA, a sociology/anthropology major, is building a career at the intersection of law, education, and civil rights. A 2013 alumna of Harvard Law School, Girma was funded by a Skadden Fellowship and will be working at the Disability Rights Advocates in Berkeley, California. Being deaf-blind with very limited sight and hearing herself, Girma focuses on making digital instructional materials more accessible for college students with disabilities. She received recognition by the White House as a “champion of change” in the field of education.

Matthew Hambro BA is in a joint doctoral program of the University of North Carolina and Duke University. He is on track to graduate in May 2017. He previously taught German in Berlin.

Nico Jose BA displayed his newest collection of 3-D art at his studio in LRI Design Plaza in Bel-Air Makati, Philippines. He says his double major in environmental studies and studio art contributed to his pieces.

Asher Katz BA is president and CEO of Jacquard Products, an artist materials manufacturing company in Northern California.
