The 2010 Business Law
Roundtable Presents:
“THE BUSINESS OF HEALTH CARE”
There is probably no more volatile and complicated issue affecting Americans today than health care - its availability, cost, quality and delivery. In addition to the obvious and very personal ramifications of health or illness for individuals, there are overarching social, political and economic issues tied directly to the ways we provide and pay for health care. Approximately 18% of our GDP is tied to health care services and products, and unless short and long-term reform measures are successfully implemented, this sector’s share of national resources will only continue to increase (and result in an ever-diminishing pool of resources for other civic needs). Also, significant economic competitiveness and equity challenges are produced by the uniquely American system of employment-based health care benefits, which, unlike other forms of compensation, are not subject to payroll or income taxes. With the average annual employer-paid premium costs of $4,000 for an individual, and $13,000 for family coverage, the median health care cost for businesses is about 11% of their payroll. This has special implications for small businesses which constitute the majority of private employers in the United States.
