On January 25th, 2018, LC SALDF had the opportunity to host Ryan Merkley, who is the Director of Research Advocacy at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). On Friday, November 10^th, 2017, LC SALDF as well as SIEL and NEDC co-hosted Tom and Henry Lininger, who discussed wildlife protections that import aspects of the 4^thamendment. They propose a doctrine of wildlife privacy that would import some aspects of Fourth Amendment jurisprudence to limit wildlife surveillance and limit the tracking and killing of wolves to avoid interactions with humans and livestock.

On Monday, October 16, Elizabeth Baker, Esq. spoke to our SALDF chapter about her work with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Ms. Baker was introduced by LC SALDF's Pro Bono Chair, Megan Amos. Megan interned at PCRM this past summer and, fortunately for LC SALDF, used the connections she made there to bring Ms. Baker to a LC SALDF Speaker Series event.

2017 Animal Law Conference – A Huge Success!

October 13^th, 14^th, and 15^th students, lawyers, and advocates gathered at the annual Animal Law Conference held in Portland, Oregon. The night opened with Joyce Tischler and Dean Pamela Frasch marking the 25^th anniversary of the conference by taking a walk down memory lane. SALDF's co-directors, Maral Cavner and Ashlyn Whitbeck, introduced the pair and Maral perfectly captured the importance of Joyce's role in the animal law movement by thanking her and reminding her that she "opened the door for us, and we promise to make (her) proud while walking through it." Joyce, who is referred to as the mother of Animal Law, was then awarded the official title as recognition for her pioneering work.

Jennifer Fearing, Fearless Advocacy, Speaks to SALDF

On Thursday, October 12^th, Jennifer Fearing gave a talk to our SALDF chapter cataloging her achievements as a lobbyist in California, and providing us with advice on how to become effective animal advocates. Ms. Fearing is the President of Fearless Advocacy, a Sacramento based lobbying firm that works to advance the protections of animals through the law in California. She got her start as a lobbyist and animal rights advocate in California for the Humane Society of the United States. For the HSUS, Ms. Fearing led successful campaigns such as the Proposition 2 ballot measure, which requires that certain animals used for slaughter have adequate space to turn around, lie down, and fully extend their limbs. Through her organization, she has continued to be an unstoppable force for the animals in CA.

Peter Brandt, LC Law Alum, Speaks to SALDF

On Thursday, October 5^th, 2017, Peter Brandt spoke about bird flu and factory farming to our SALDF chapter. Peter is a Lewis & Clark Law alum, and the senior attorney for Farm Animal Litigation with the Humane Society of the United States' Animal Protection Litigation section. Peter has been involved in animal protection issues for over a decade, and currently oversees the entire farm animal litigation docket for HSUS. He has been involved in a wide variety of farm animal protection lawsuits and administrative actions, and has also assisted on some criminal matters. These include a variety of subjects, such as false advertising related to farm animals' care, and federal citizen suit actions against massive factory farms.

On Thursday, September 21 st the Center for Animal Law Studies at Lewis & Clark Law CALS) and the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund chapter of Lewis & Clark Law (LC SALDF) co-hosted an Animal Law Program Overview event for new students at Lewis & Clark Law. The event was packed, filling up almost the entirety of the large classroom in which it was held and was an exciting indication of the bright future of the animal law program at the law school.

Russ Mead Speaks to SALDF

On Thursday, September 7^th, 2017, visiting professor Russ Mead gave a talk to our LC SALDF chapter titled "I Could Do That." After years of teaching at Lewis & Clark Law, in 2016 Professor Mead was named the Shared Earth Foundation Visiting Professor. Professor Mead was instrumental in the rescue of animals after Hurricane Katrina, and has implemented other large-scale rescues, including complex hoarding cases involving over hundreds of animals.
