Professor Shares Award with Law School

     Professor Dan Rohlf of Lewis & Clark Law School recently was honored as the recipient an Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman award.  The award carried a $25,000 award, and Professor Rohlf contributed $12,500 of the award to the law school.  He asked the funds be designated for support of a student award granted to law students showing outstanding leadership in the field of environmental law.

  The award given to Professor Rohlf was established by Gail McKnight Beckman to benefit teachers who have inspired their former students to make a difference in their communities. The award is given to current or former academic faculty members who have inspired their former students to “create an organization which has demonstrably conferred a benefit on the community at large.”

   Alternatively, the academic faculty member must have inspired their former students to “establish on a lasting basis a concept, procedure, or movement of comparable benefit to the community at large.” Recipients receive a $25,000 award.

   Of particular significance is the fact that former students are the nominators. Some of Professor Rohlf’s former students, now working for public interest groups in Washington DC, nominated Professor Rohlf.
