Spring 2009 Externships: 4pm, October 31, 2008
Summer/Fall 2009 Externships: 4pm, February 27, 2009
An Externship is an opportunity for students to earn a full semester's or summer's worth of academic credit by working full time (without pay) under the guidance of a practicing attorney at a carefully selected placement with a federal or state appellate court judge, public interest or non-profit agency, government agency, or corporate in-house counsel. The full semester Externship requires 14 to 17 weeks of experience, participation in a classroom component (6 hours prior to the placement, 20 hours during the placement, and 2 hours following return from placement), writing a substantial paper (which can count as your A or B paper), and keeping a journal. A summer Externship must be at least 10 weeks long and only requires the concurrent classroom component. It is imperative that the student begins planning at least 6 months prior to the application deadline, as it takes a great deal of detailed preparation. Application materials are on file in the Career Services Office. If a student is interested in an Externship, or just has questions, please direct them to the Assistant Dean of Career Services.
