Federalist Society
“The courts must declare the sense of the law; and if they should be disposed to exercise WILL instead of JUDGMENT, the consequence would be the substitution of their pleasure to that of the legislative body.”
The Federalist, No. 78
Our Mission
The Federalist Society of Lewis & Clark Law School seeks to contribute political balance to legal education by providing a forum for legal experts of opposing views to interact with law students.
Our Purpose
The Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies is a non-partisan organization “dedicated to reforming the current legal order.”
The Society is “founded on the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution, and that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be.”
“The Society’s main purpose is to sponsor fair, serious, and open debate.”
The Society seeks to redefine the terms of legal debate “by providing a forum for legal experts of opposing views to interact with members of the legal profession, the judiciary, law students, academics, and the architects of public policy.”
