IP LAW MEETS THE BUSINESS AND ENTERTAINMENT WORLDS
With Kohel Haver, Partner, Swider Medeiros Haver, LLP

Please join us for a discussion of three supreme cases drawn from the last 30 days of Kohel Haver's practice - each case involves the challenging intersection of business and intellectual property law. Your participation, input and questions will be welcome. If there is time we'll show a short and interesting "fair use" video.

Furthermore, we will cover: - Under what circumstances can one claim rights in a 100 year old recording? - How can you assess damages in an imaginary world with virtual infringements of real world business?

Kohel Haver is a Portland Arts and Entertainment Attorney and L&C Alum. Mr. Haver practices in the areas working with creative people and the arts - including a specialty in copyright and related intellectual property, technology and business law.

SHOULD AMERICA'S OPERATING SYSTEM BE OPEN SOURCE?
With Carl Malamud, President, Public.Resource.Org.

Who owns the law? A thicket of copyright restrictions has arisen around the primary legal materials of the United States. Statutes, regulations, hearings, and the other materials that make up the raw materials of democracy all face restrictions. We'll look at how the law of the law is applied in the modern era, and focus on a set of issues regarding ownership of the law in Oregon.

Carl Malamud is the President and Founder of Public.Resource.Org, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has been instrumental in the placing of over 90 million pages of primary legal materials on the Internet. Public.Resource.Org continues to lead efforts to waive copyright on government materials at the state and federal level.

IPSO'S ANNUAL CHILI COOK-OFF

IPSO invites everyone to its annual Chili Cook-Off, whether you want to enter your chili in the contest or simply want to enjoy some free food, drinks, and company.

For those of you (students, faculty, or staff) who want to see how your secret chili recipe stacks up or simply want to get a shot at some cool prizes, please ENTER THE CONTEST. All you have to do is email nicolo@lclark.edu before the contest and then bring your chili to the LRC the morning of November 5th. At 12pm a panel of faculty "judges" will rank their two favorite recipes. Students will also vote on their favorite chili. Later in the afternoon prizes will be given to the 1st and 2nd place chilies as well as to the "student choice award" chili.

If you cannot enter the contest, feel free to come by for the free FOOD and BEER! After the judges have cast their votes, the chili and other food will be available for lunch. There will also be a keg of cold beer to wash down those particularly spicy chili's (for those with 21+ I.D.).
