Student Animal Legal Defense Fund
Animal Law Speaker Series: 2009 - 2010
The Animal Law Speaker Series, sponsored by the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, features faculty, staff, and off-campus professionals speaking on a wide variety of topics in animal law. The purpose of the Speaker Series is to introduce students to the issues affecting animals and to encourage open discussions on various animal-related concerns. The general discussion format is informal, allowing the speakers and students to interact in an intimate setting.
First year students, in particular, benefit from the Speaker Series because topics help 1L’s explore various aspects of the animal law field and provide an opportunity to meet faculty and staff outside the classroom. Past topics include: “International Illegal Wildlife Trade,” “Ocean Sanctuaries,” and “Eliminating Invasive Species.” The line up for each semester changes according to the needs and interests expressed by students. All sessions are held at Lewis & Clark Law School. Bring your friends or roommate- everyone is welcome!
Fall 2009
October 14, 2009:Lords of Nature: Life in the Lands of Great Predators
Co-hosted with Northwestern Enviromental Defense Center (NEDC)
Wolves and cougars, once driven to the edge of existence, are finding their way back -- from the Yellowstone plateau to the canyons of Zion, from the farm country of northern Minnesota to the rugged open range of the West. This is the story of a science now discovering top carnivores as revitalizing forces of nature, and of a society now learning tolerance for beasts they once banished.
September 14, 2009:International Illegal Wildlife Trade
Co-hosted with International Law Society (ILS)
Mr. Zwirn, Director of U.S. Operations, Wildlife Alliance, will: (1) discuss the severity and scale of the illegal wildlife trade and the species at risk; (2) provide a brief overview of the relevant US laws and agencies addressing the issue; and (3) highlighting the international treaty and other components meant to protect endangered species from trafficking and overexploitation.
