- Hailed by the Washingtonian magazine as the “most effective public-interest law firm in Washington, D.C.,” Meyer Glitzenstein & Crystal specializes in precedent-setting federal litigation in the fields of environmental protection, animal welfare, natural resource conservation, and open government. The firm is now accepting applications for full-time Law Clerks for Fall 2011. Law Clerks assist with all aspects of litigation and, depending on the firm’s case load, will likely have the opportunity to work on a range of issues handled by the firm.
- Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills are required. Environmental, animal, and/or administrative law background is preferable, although not required.
- Law Clerks typically arrange for public interest funding, or alternatively, class credit. Those with only partial or no funding may be compensated on a public interest pay scale commensurate with the nature of the firm’s practice. L & C students working for academic credit do not qualify for monetary compensation.

Fall 2011 Law Clerk

- HSUS is seeking several conscientious law students for unpaid Fall 2010 legal clerkships within the Animal Protection Litigation Section in our Washington, D.C., office. Law clerks will work closely with attorneys and be integrally involved in the process of researching, preparing and prosecuting animal protection lawsuits in state and federal courts.
- Law clerks must have excellent legal writing and research skills. Although experience in animal protection and/or environmental law is preferred, we are primarily interested in working with students who are resourceful, innovative and productive, and who have a strong interest in animal protection litigation. While a full-time commitment is preferred, we are also accepting applications from those seeking part-time positions

Animal Studies Assistant Professor/Faculty Fellow

- The Animal Studies Initiative invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor/Faculty Fellow. The appointment will be for one year beginning September 1, 2011, renewable annually for a maximum of three years, pending administrative and budgetary approval. The successful applicant will contribute to the education of undergraduates minoring in Animal Studies, teaching three courses per year. In addition, the successful candidate will actively participate in an initiative directed towards developing Animal Studies as a rigorous field of academic inquiry.
- They welcome candidates from various academic backgrounds, but they have special interests in ethics and animals, and animals in science. Primary academic training need not be in Animal Studies, but there must be demonstrable evidence of a sincere and substantive commitment to working in this field. Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. no more than three years before the application date.

Sierra Club Environmental Law Fellow

- Duration: One year, with possible one-year extension. Start date is expected to be around September 1, 2011. Context: As part of national Club legal team, the Environmental Law Fellow helps coordinate all aspects of the Sierra Club’s legal work, including evaluating proposed legal actions, administering ongoing litigation and participating in select litigation matters as counsel. Under the supervision of senior and staff attorneys, the law fellow evaluates proposed Sierra Club environmental litigation; helps strategize and implement programmatic legal campaigns; serves as a legal resource for the grassroots membership; participates in prosecuting ongoing litigation and assists in building the Environmental Law Program.
- Duties: 1. Evaluates proposed environmental litigation so that national volunteer and staff leadership can decide whether the Sierra Club should participate in a lawsuit; 2. Supervises and administers ongoing Club litigation so that Club can maintain overview of its litigation docket; helps resolve problems that arise in individual lawsuits; 3. Helps senior legal staff implement programmatic litigation campaigns; 4. Analyzes legal cases and trends for Club membership; 5. Serves as legal resource for Club membership; helps chapters develop and run their local environmental legal programs; 6. Limited prosecution of key Club lawsuits under the supervision of staff and senior attorneys; 7. Develops informational, educational, and fundraising materials for Environmental Law Program; 8. Helps select and supervise law student interns; 9. Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.
- Knowledge & Skills: J.D. degree and license to practice law. Solid writing and analytic skills. Strong interpersonal and consensus-building skills. Knowledge of environmental law.

Columbia Riverkeeper
- Columbia Riverkeeper is a nonprofit conservation organization whose mission is to restore and protect the water quality of the Columbia River and all life connected to it, from the headwaters to the Pacific Ocean.
- They are seeking externs for summer 2011 and for fall 2011. The extern would work with staff attorneys (all LC alums) and a very active docket. This position provides practical experience with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the Clean Water Act, as well as local land use laws.
