Position Objectives:

The Development Associate is responsible for assisting the Director of Development with the day-to-day operations of ALDF fundraising programs. He or she will work closely with the Director of Development, and other ALDF staff and Board members as needed, to help support fund development activities and meet fundraising goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Prospect & Donor Management

  • Donor prospect identification and research to include foundations, corporations and individual donors
  • Assist the Development Director with the cultivation and maintenance of relationships with philanthropic organizations, corporations, and individuals.

Development Operations

  • Maintain the development operations calendar and mailing schedules
  • Assist with the preparation and processing of in-house mailings
  • Maintain donor records in donor database, including ongoing updates to donor and prospect constituent records, entering financial gift information
  • Create analytical reports and pull data as needed related to historical and current giving, donor strategy, and fundraising activity
  • Provide administrative assistance to the planned giving program
  • Handle estate administrative tasks including working with attorneys handling estate matters through to distribution
  • Work with Director of Development to help coordinate workplace giving campaigns, including United Way, Combined Federal Campaign and state campaigns
  • Work with vendor to complete all state charity registrations and renewals to maintain compliance.

Strategic Communications

  • Work with Director of Development, in-house Communications Department, grant writers and consultants to produce and edit written materials related to fund development, including letters of inquiry, letters of intent, background research, concept papers, proposals, gift acknowledgements, stewardship reports, and letters to donors
  • Handle calls from major donors and provide courteous Donor Services support to include answering gift inquiries and assisting with gift-related issues

Events

  • Work with Director of Development to help plan and execute logistics for ALDF donor cultivation and recognition events

Other projects as needed and some travel required

Key Qualifications:

  • Must have a minimum of one to two years of work experience, preferably at a non-profit or in the field of fundraising/development, marketing or communications
  • Must have a demonstrated interest and experience with animal welfare issues and be committed to the mission of the Animal Legal Defense Fund
  • Must have a high degree of computer literacy as well as experience with Microsoft Office suite (Word and Excel in particular) and an understanding of database management, preferably with donor database software like DonorDirect, The Raiser’s Edge, or Salesforce.
  • Must have the ability to maintain donor files and routinely handle confidential donor information.
  • Must have excellent attention to detail, organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities inherent in a fast-paced environment
  • Must have the demonstrated ability to think strategically, problem solve and manage multiple tasks concurrently
  • Must have a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, effective communication and the ability to work cooperatively with others in a team-oriented work environment
  • Must have the ability to build relationships with a broad range of constituents with varying cultural, political and social backgrounds, including potential donors, funders and sponsors

  • Experience with grant writing and management is a plus

Position Objectives:

An ALDF Staff Attorney is responsible for the day-to-day litigation of ALDF’s civil caseload, proactively developing new cases, assisting with ALDF’s legislative needs, as well as representing the organization out of the courtroom. He or she will work closely with the Director of Litigation as well as ALDF’s other Staff Attorney and Litigation Fellows.

Description:

  • To represent ALDF in its civil strategic impact litigation, to develop new theories and cases, to assist with legislative needs, and to otherwise represent ALDF. He or she will:
    • Research and develop legal theories and strategies for lawsuits
    • Research and develop fact patterns for lawsuits
    • File and handle lawsuits 
    • Oversee drafting, editing and submission of amicus curiae briefs on behalf of ALDF.
    • Assist with the review and development of legislation
  • Coordinate and collaborate with Criminal Justice Program staff on cases that have, or could have, both civil and criminal components.
  • Coordinate, as needed, with Animal Law Program staff.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations for professional conferences, fundraising events, etc. when needed
  • Work with Communications and other departments to answer questions on civil legal issues and procedures, and to propose, draft, proof read and/or edit content on cases and legal developments for ALDF website, blogs, e-Update, e-alerts, newsletters, donor mailings, etc.
  • Provide in-house expertise for staff on questions concerning Litigation Program cases, animal law civil cases in general and civil procedures and legal strategy.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a Juris Doctor degree, excelled in law school, and be admitted to practice law in at least one state.
  • Must have a minimum three years litigation experience.
  • Must have excellent organizational and prioritization skills and be able to meet deadlines.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be “computer literate” and have experience with basic software application, including, Outlook, Word, Excel and internet browsers.
  • Must understand and be committed to the mission of the Animal Legal Defense Fund.

State Legislative Director

Job Summary:

Directs the state legislative work for a priority state, to be determined, working to implement the broader vision as articulated by the Senior State Legislative Director. Works closely with state legislative team to identify and implement strategies for the state legislative agenda of the ASPCA.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Carry out state legislative strategies consistent with ASPCA’s philosophy and strategic goals and promote and implement tactics to achieve legislative goals
  • Research, develop, and work with legislative counsel to draft legislation to strengthen legal protections for and public policies towards animals
  • Cultivate positive, productive and enduring working relationships with members of legislature and their staff
  • Represent the ASPCA in a professional, courteous, and congenial manner while lobbying and negotiating with legislators and their staff to support or oppose legislation, and execute campaigns to secure passage or defeat
  • Integrate and coordinate state legislative strategies with Community Outreach, Anti-Cruelty Group and other ASPCA sections and activities

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, JD degree strongly preferred

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience working with a non-profit, legislative office or government agency in the legal and/or government affairs department.

  • Legal analysis, interpretation, and significance of legislative proposals
  • Strong knowledge of the legislative process, the committee structure, leadership positions, procedures, and political and cultural trends on the Hill

Job Summary:

The ASPCA’s policies and procedures mitigate institutional risk, enhance efficiency and support the organization’s compliance with complex and overlapping laws and regulations. The Staff Counsel for Compliance will conduct comprehensive organization-wide research, engage in interdepartmental fact-finding, develop policies and oversee ongoing compliance with federal state and local laws and regulations.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensure ongoing compliance with state, federal, and local laws, regulations and internal policies
  • Oversee multi-state registration and reporting requirements, including those regarding charitable organization registration, lobbying, and corporate sponsorship regulations
  • Conduct comprehensive research on diverse substantive and procedural issues, which may include fundraising, lobbying, transport, veterinary practice, fraud prevention and other issues relevant to ASPCA initiatives and programs

Education:

  • In-house legal experience (for-profit or nonprofit), regulatory experience, or project management experience or expertise a plus
  • Some experience or knowledge of accounting, tax or audit highly recommended

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Knowledge of relevant substantive areas related to nonprofit law and management
  • Knowledge of animal law is not required, but a commitment to animal welfare is helpful

Legal Advocacy Legislative Counsel

Job Summary:

The Legal Advocacy Legislative Counsel working with, and under the supervision of Chief Counsel is principally responsible for fulfilling the “legislative counsel “role which focuses on providing the Government Relations team with legislative drafting, legal analysis and research assistance. The Legislative Counsel will also assist the other attorneys in the Legal Advocacy department in providing “second chair” assistance in animal cruelty prosecutions and in handling select civil litigation matters. The Second Chair program promotes and helps ensure successful prosecution of animal cruelty cases, and provides legal advocacy and support in cases of inadequate enforcement and prosecution.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Along with Chief Counsel establish and implement the “Legislative Counsel” role within the Anti Cruelty Legal Advocacy Department.
  • Implement protocols for interactions and work flow with Government Relations team
  • Provide legislative and legal analysis on proposed state and federal legislation to Government Relations team.
  • As requested by GR, draft legislation and propose amendments to legislation at the state and federal levels
  • Conduct legal research to discern whether legislation is warranted on identified animal welfare issues and if so, how to best proceed in drafting such legislation
  • Serve as liaison with the Government Relations team on legislative matters
  • As requested by GR, assist in lobbying complex bills that require more in depth legal expertise
  • Assist other Legal Advocacy attorneys in providing back-up and hands-on legal assistance to prosecutors and cruelty investigators (including the Anti-Cruelty Group’s Field Investigation and Response (“FIR”) team) including: legal advice, legal research, drafting of motions, jury instructions, bonding/forfeiture petitions, legal memoranda, appellate briefs and other legal documents
  • Connect prosecutors and investigators to resources including forensic, behavioral and legal experts
  • Identify cases likely to impact large numbers of animals or with potential for significant change in animal welfare law (both good and bad) and offer legal back-up services to ensure favorable outcomes in those cases.
  • Assist in the planning, preparation and presentation of legal proceedings in addition to or as substitutes for criminal prosecutions where appropriate, including writs of prohibition and mandamus, declaratory judgments, and requests for injunctive relief that out of Second Chair and FIR activities
  • Assist in handling affirmative civil litigation cases brought by the Legal Advocacy Department. (including amicus curiae work where appropriate)
  • Collect and report program data

Education:

  • Juris Doctor Degree required

Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in legislative analysis and drafting at the state or federal level.
  • In addition, criminal and/or civil litigation particularly in the areas of animal welfare or other public interest/social justice litigation is preferred but not required

Experience:

  • Minimum of five (5) years litigation experience
  • Prosecutorial or criminal defense experience is preferred but comparable civil litigation experience will be considered, particularly in the areas of animal welfare or other public interest/social justice litigation

Visiting Animal Law Faculty Position

Portland, Oregon Lewis & Clark Law School is seeking applications for a visiting faculty member to teach animal law starting in the 2012-2013 academic year. They seek candidates with animal law teaching experience and will consider both year-long and one semester visitors.

Volunteer Executive Director

Four Feet Forward is seeking a qualified, and highly motivated, volunteer executive director to help run and grow the organization, someone experienced in nonprofit management and board governance. The position only requires a commitment of 5-10 hours a week. The director will work in close collaboration with the project manager, and will be responsible for communicating regularly with the board.

Four Feet Forward helps small animal advocacy organizations with their legal and media campaigns by offering professional services at no cost. The 501(c)(3) has been operating for 10 years and is made up of a group of people dedicated to advocating for animals in the courtroom and the broader public sphere. The network of professional consultants volunteer their time to help non-profits achieve their goals in support of animal welfare. Duties include:

  1. Communicating with the project manager about ongoing projects
  2. Planning agendas for board meetings
  3. Strategizing how to develop our infrastructure and expand our operations
  4. Publicizing what we do and our accomplishments to potential consultants and clients
  5. Managing board members’ activities
  6. Researching nonprofit development and animal advocacy to stay up to date with our field

Again, this is a volunteer position and requires a commitment of 5-10 hours a week. A background in fundraising and managerial experience is preferred. Above all, the president must have the passion and time to help grow this animal advocacy organization into a significant force.

ALDF Litigation Program Clerkships

The Animal Legal Defense Fund is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the lives and advancing the interests of animals through the legal system.  Since 1981, the Animal Legal Defense Fund has won precedent-setting victories that have expanded legal protections for companion animals, wildlife, animals in research labs, and those on factory farms.

During the school year, six promising law students are given the opportunity to learn more about animal law by participating in the Animal Legal Defense Fund Litigation Program Clerkships. The clerkship positions are described below.

Litigation Program Clerkship
Responsibilities include preparing legal memoranda, working with ALDF’s litigation department in developing new cases, and assisting in the preparation of pleadings in cases currently being handled by ALDF. The successful applicant must have a sincere interest in animal protection and be willing to accept a variety of assignments within the expanding field of animal law. The primary focus of this clerkship is on civil animal law issues, but students will be exposed to criminal anti-cruelty cases as well.

Clerkships are for approximately 28 weeks (fall and spring semester). Students are expected to commit 15 hours per week to the clerkship, all of which may be done remotely. The start date is flexible (dependent upon the student’s schedule). Clerkships are open to second- and third-year students only. Compensation is $15 per hour. (Subject to the student’s preference, we may instead structure the clerkship as an unpaid, for-credit externship or as a volunteer position to meet a curricular pro bono requirement.)

ALDF Summer Clerkships

The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the lives and advancing the interests of animals through the legal system. Since 1981, the Animal Legal Defense Fund has won precedent-setting victories that have expanded legal protections for companion animals, wildlife, animals in research labs, and those in factory farming situations.

During the summer of 2013, six promising law students will be given the opportunity to learn more about animal law by participating in the ALDF Summer Clerkships. The clerkship positions are described below.

Criminal Justice Program Clerkship (Portland, Ore.)
Responsibilities will include reviewing cruelty reports, communicating with law enforcement officers, animal welfare investigators and prosecutors, assisting in the development of proposed legislation, researching a wide range of legal issues, and drafting pleadings and research memoranda. The successful applicant must have a sincere interest in animal protection and be willing to accept a variety of assignments within the expanding field of animal law. The primary focus of this clerkship is on criminal cases involving animal cruelty, but there will exposure to civil animal law issues as well. This clerkship position is being offered at the ALDF Office in Portland, Oregon.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the lives and advancing the interests of animals through the legal system. Since 1981, the Animal Legal Defense Fund has won precedent-setting victories that have expanded legal protections for companion animals, wildlife, animals in research labs, and those in factory farming situations.

Each summer, two (2) promising law students are given the opportunity to learn more about animal law by participating in the David Reuben Legal Clerkships. The two clerkship positions are described below.

Criminal Justice Program Clerkship
Responsibilities include reviewing cruelty reports, communicating with law enforcement officers, animal welfare investigators and prosecutors, assisting in the development of proposed legislation, researching a wide range of legal issues, and drafting pleadings and research memoranda. The successful applicant must have a sincere interest in animal protection and be willing to accept a variety of assignments within the expanding field of animal law. Litigation Program Clerkship
Responsibilities include legal research, working with ALDF’s litigation department in developing new cases, and assistance in preparation of pleadings in cases currently being handled by ALDF. Legislative, Wildlife, and Safe Haven Interns

AWI seeks two legislative interns every fall, spring, and summer. This is a great opportunity for law students, political science students, or anyone with a passion for making a difference in the lives of animals. Interns will assist our government and legal affairs staff in maintaining updated Hill contact lists, delivering documents to and attend meetings with Congressional offices and assisting staff in research; as well as miscellaneous tasks of an administrative nature. No specific academic major is required; however, preferred candidates will have a strong work ethic and be willing to take on any project. Interns may work full-time or part-time and can arrange to receive course credit. Wildlife Interns

AWI offers two on-site internships every fall, spring, and summer for persons enthusiastic about our work to protect wildlife, both terrestrial and aquatic. We also accept one to two off-site/remote interns if needed. Applicants must be willing to assist with basic support including but not limited to data collection, computer, telephone and library research. Projects are diverse; several needing a legal background, ideal for a law school student or recent graduate. Safe Haven Program Interns

Part time intern(s) needed to assist with updating information about “safe haven” programs, i.e., domestic violence (DV) shelters that will also take a victim’s pets or help her place them safely. Individuals involved with this project call DV shelters to find out if they provide such services and if so, whether they are on site or referrals. The calling list and a script are provided and calls can be made from one’s home during weekday hours anytime between 9:00 to 5:00. Hours worked per week: negotiable. This project is an important part of an AWI effort to develop a training program and technical assistance network for prosecutors to help them better handle animal abuse/animal fighting prosecutions; this updated information will be made available to them. Summer 2012 Farm Animal Policy Internship


Animal Welfare Institute

The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) works to reduce animal suffering and promote the welfare of all animals, including animals in agriculture. As a part of our mission, we promote humane farming systems and work to advance legislative and regulatory efforts to improve the conditions of farm animals. We also administer our own animal care certification program, Animal Welfare Approved, through which we work with scientists and farmers to set the highest farm animal care standards in the country.

During the summer of 2012, one promising student will have the opportunity to learn more about farm animal law and policy as a law clerk or intern. Responsibilities include legal research and writing, tracking legislation and regulations, and drafting public policy comments. Projects will cover a range of factory farming issues; the clerk will support AWI in its efforts to eliminate harmful on-farm practices, improve conditions during long-distance transport, encourage humane handling at slaughter, and challenge misleading labeling of animal products. The ideal candidate must have a genuine interest in animal welfare and a background in law, public policy, or animal science.

Summer Internship

Oregon Humane Society

The Oregon Humane Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the lives and advancing the interests of animals through adoption of homeless pets, animal welfare legislation, humane education, abuse investigation, and community outreach and leadership. Since 1868, the Oregon Humane Society has been dedicated to improving the welfare of animals in Oregon. The organization worked with Oregon’s first humane investigator in 1890 and currently employs three field officers who work full time in the field enforcing Oregon’s animal cruelty laws. OHS now serves the needs of over 11,500 animals each year. With over 100 staff members and a volunteer force of over 1,000, OHS is dedicated to 100 percent of the animals admitted to the shelter and strives to build a community of compassion.

During the summer of 2012, a law student will be given the opportunity to learn more about animal law and the inner workings of OHS by participating in the Summer 2012 Investigations Internship. The internship position is described below.

The intern will have learning opportunities that include reviewing cruelty complaints, communicating with animal welfare investigators and prosecutors, researching a wide range of legal issues, and assisting with the drafting of documents associated with pending cases.  

Education and Special Skills

  • This opportunity is open only to rising third-year law students from an accredited institution. The ability to acquire school credit for internship hours is determined solely by the academic institution that the student is enrolled at and it is the responsibility of the student to inquire within their institution for credit.

Summer 2012 Internship


American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ (ASPCA) Government Relations Department works to help enact meaningful protections for animals at the state and federal levels. They offer advocacy training and support for citizens who wish to engage in policy change; they lobby for bills that strengthen animal protection and prevent cruelty; they work to ensure that strong regulations are issued to implement new policies; and they work on ballot campaigns to advance protections when a legislative solution is unavailable.

Internship Structure: The duration of each Internship position will be determined on case-by-case basis. Generally, the Summer Internship position will be: Between May 7 - August 31, 2012; 10-16 weeks, 20-40 hrs/wk preferred. At the will and sole discretion of the ASPCA.

The Internship is structured as a learning or work study program and can be the basis for credit at the undergraduate or graduate school level. Students will be mentored by professional staff and attorneys.

Program: Government Relations Interns will, under direct supervision, learn about and provide assistance on key projects necessary to the furtherance of our goals and will become familiar with the role that the Department plays in legislative and policy work. These unpaid positions are based out of our Washington D.C. office.

Learning Objectives: The Interns will be given opportunities to: Help to mobilize the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade membership on key initiatives; Aid in tracking the existence and movement of administrative regulations and laws pertaining to animals; Draft letters and other documents and conduct legal and issue research to assist regulatory, federal and state efforts; Attend Capitol Hill events, such as hearings and briefings; Attend meetings, hearings, and local events as an ASPCA representative; Respond to information requests from ASPCA constituents; Serve as office liaison for traveling and remote staff members; Attend strategy and staff meetings; Assist with miscellaneous office tasks and projects as needed.

Eligibility: Students currently enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, or law study, who have an interest in pursuing a career working in animal welfare, public policy, political science, law, or other relevant field.

Salary: This is an unpaid, volunteer internship. Course credit/work study credit can be arranged if eligible, and the Intern is responsible for arranging this with the school.

Academic Credit: Credit hours can be awarded for completion of the full internship program.

Housing: Housing is not available and is the responsibility of the Intern.

Summer Litigation Intern Position


Compassion Over Killing

Compassion Over Killing (COK) is seeking Litigation Interns for Summer, 2012 (unpaid). Compassion Over Killing is a national nonprofit (501(c)(3)) animal advocacy organization. Working to end animal abuse since 1995, COK focuses on ending and preventing cruelty to animals in agriculture. The 2012 Summer Litigation Interns will work with COK’s Legal Advocacy Program in our West Coast office in Torrance, California.

The Summer Litigation Interns will work on litigation projects aimed at protecting farmed animals; most of these projects are plaintiffs’ litigation. These projects will likely employ a variety of legal theories, relating to areas such as state criminal cruelty laws, false advertising and unfair competition laws, tort liability, environmental protection laws, administrative law, tax, and corporate law. The interns will have opportunities to research new projects as well as assist heavily with ongoing projects. They will work closely with Compassion Over Killing’s general counsel.

Excellent research and writing skills are required. In addition, the Litigation Intern should be interested in exploring novel approaches to protecting animals through litigation. Candidates with a background and interest in animal protection are preferred, although it is not required.
