Join the National Lawyers’ Guild and NYC police misconduct attorney Andrea Ritchie as Ms. Ritchie speaks about the book she co-authored, Queer (In)justice: The Criminalization of LGBT People in the United States.   Ms. Ritchie’s talk will be followed by happy hour at the Florida Room (435 N Killingsworth Street).    Andrea Ritchie is a police misconduct attorney and organizer who has engaged in extensive research, writing, speaking, litigation, organizing, and advocacy on profiling, policing, and physical and sexual violence by law enforcement agents against women, girls, and LGBT people of color in the US and Canada over the past two decades.  She currently coordinates Streetwise & Safe (SAS), a leadership development initiative aimed at sharing information, strategies for safety, and visions for change among LGBT youth of color.  Her book, Violence Every Day: Racial Profiling and Police Brutality Against Women, Girls and Transgender People of Color, will be published in 2012 by South End Press.   See http://www.queerinjustice.com/ for more information.

Our Annual SBA Halloween Party is tonight at Oaks Park (INDOORS in the spooky DANCE PAVILION), 7:45-12am.  We will have a fantastic DJ, plenty of free beer on tap, free food from Montage (mac n’ cheese) and Elephant’s Deli, including vegan and gluten-free food, and a costume contest.  Gift cards for the contest are from Powell’s Book Store, VooDoo Doughnuts, and Stumptown.  Costume categories are; best overall costume, best legally-inspired costume, and most creative costume.  Taxi vouchers will be available at the event to ensure a safe trip home, but remember they are from Oaks Park to one location in Portland.   Tickets are on sale in the SBA Office (#38) in Gantenbein and at lunch time until this Friday in the LRC for $10.  They are $12 at the door, unless you bring a can of food, in which case there will be a discount.
