What, if any, rights does a company have to use customer information for advertising? Nike’s privacy compliance team leader, Jasdeep Singh, and privacy compliance manager, Jason Peterson, described the algorithms employed by internet advertisers and the legal duties companies have to customers regarding personal information.

Second Annual Data Privacy Forum

Where is the balance point between an individual’s right to privacy and the freedom of law enforcement agencies to pursue information? Students learned about the many issues involved with the collection of data by law enforcement, consumer privacy, and the effects of algorithmic bias on marginalized groups.

Spring 2021 Xperiential Workshop: Law Firm Economics

Law firms are minicorporations. Students learned about governance, partnership agreements, and C-suite operations from panelists representing law practices of various sizes. Speakers included Jerry Carleton ’07 of Immix Law, Steve Hedberg ’84 of Perkins Coie, and representatives from Schwabe and Latham & Watkins. This is part of an ongoing series.

The Business of IP

The work of an entertainment lawyer is full of intellectual property issues. Jeff Hegedus, executive vice president of business and legal affairs of Skydance Television, spoke to members of the Intellectual Property Student Organization, describing the day-to-day work of an entertainment lawyer and sharing how he navigated his career path.

Maitreya Jani Maitreya Jani Credit: Jen C.How do lawyers protect their corporations from overstepping data privacy boundaries? Maitreya Jani, assistant general counsel for patents at Fortune Brands Home & Security and member of the CBLI Innovation Board, spoke to students about data mapping, the need to devise an internal regime for the control of information that satisfies the terms of various laws and international agreements, the need for attorneys to keep in mind the specific rights of consumers to their information, and the necessity of adding Data Privacy Amendments (DPAs) to consumer contracts.

Inaugural West Coast Bankruptcy Roundtable
This event will be presented jointly in Los Angeles by the USC Gould School of Law and Lewis & Clark Law School. Spearheaded by leading scholars, including Professor Samir Parikh of Lewis & Clark, the roundtable will delve into legal issues essential to an adequate understanding of contemporary corporate practice.
