Professor Lydia Loren Helps Make Bar Review More Affordable

Lydia Loren, Henry J. Casey Professor of Law, is using her expertise to make bar review more affordable for law students.

In December 2020, Loren filmed 12 course modules focused on real property topics for Helix Bar Review by AccessLex, a new bar review program being brought to market by AccessLex Institute, a national nonprofit dedicated to the betterment of legal education. The program is offered to bar takers at cost, with a transparent pricing structure.

Loren was one of 25 law professors from around the country who filmed modules that cover topics tested on the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE). “Fresh competition in the bar review market, especially from a newcomer that is harnessing the advantages of new technology, will serve students well,” Loren said. “Students spend three long years (or more) studying to be lawyers—they need a cost-effective study tool to help them surmount the final hurdle of the bar exam.”

Loren is no stranger to participating in market disruption. In 2009, she cofounded a digital publishing company that offers law school casebooks on a pay-what-you-want model, with a suggested price of only $30. Many new casebooks offered by conventional publishers cost closer to $300, by comparison.

The Henry J. Casey Professorship in Law In 1985, Henry J. Casey and his sister, Marguerite Casey, gave generously to create a professorship that would honor the memories of their brothers, James and George Casey. A legacy to Henry Casey’s commitment to the highest ethical business standards, the professorship is bestowed upon a faculty member who brings expertise to the study of law, business, and integrity.
