Celebrating the 2018 Crime Victim Law Conference

More than 400 victim attorneys, advocates, survivors, law enforcement and other allied professionals attended the 2018 Crime Victim Law Conference!

On June 7-8, 2018, NCVLI hosted the 2018 Crime Victim Law Conference in Portland, Oregon.  More than 400 victim attorneys, advocates, survivors, law enforcement and other allied professionals attended.  This amazing group came together to Unlock the Power of Rights for Victims.

The Conference community grew by more than 100 attendees this year, and included people from 38 states, the District of Columbia, Canada and several military posts abroad.  To meet this increased demand, the Conference faculty grew to 59 presenters and 37 sessions, and included multiple facilitated conversations over its two-days.  When so many victim service professionals come together to tackle challenging issues, we move a little closer to a world in which every victim has access to the tools and resources to meaningfully assert and seek enforcement of their rights.

Topics discussed during sessions included:

  • Victims’ rights litigation successes;
  • Strategies for responding to abusive litigation;
  • The meaning and scope of confidentiality following recent military case law;
  • Innovative ways to work with child-victims;
  • Foundational theories of victims’ rights;
  • Advanced litigation techniques to advance rights; and
  • Efforts to improve services and outcomes for underserved victims, including victims with disabilities, black men who have suffered childhood sexual abuse, trafficking victims and child-victims.

By all measures, the Conference was a resounding success!  One attorney in attendance commented “WOW – all great topics.”  Another attendee, a victim advocate, expressed, “Great ideas for creating a more trauma informed process.”

After so many inspiring conversations, bold ideas, and collaboration among attendees we are re-energized for the year ahead.  We can hardly wait for the 2019 Conference.  We hope to see you at the Oregon Convention Center on June 6-7, 2019.  Registration will open later this summer so check ncvli.org often!
