Prominent law professors and legal scholars from all over the world come to Lewis & Clark for anywhere from one week to one year to do self-directed in-depth research on a variety of international and domestic legal issues. Visiting scholars provide international perspectives for our students and faculty, as our visitors in turn learn more about U.S. law. Scholars chosen for our visitor program have the opportunity to participate in our many programs at the law school including auditing courses in their area of interest, or attending nationally recognized lectures and symposia throughout the academic year.
Acceptance as a visiting scholar is not automatic; we receive many more applications than we can possibly accommodate, and must make difficult decisions among a number of good applications. Normally we can accommodate one or two visiting scholars each academic year; sometimes there is an opening in mid-year after a scholar ends a one-semester visit.
In order for visitors to benefit from this program, it is essential that they be fluent in English before arriving in the United States. Please be prepared to demonstrate that you have a high level of English communication ability sufficient to understand graduate-level research materials and class lectures.
You may submit your Visiting Scholar Terms & Application Form via e-mail or mail. Please note that the deadline for our office to receive your application is February 15 for visits during the academic year (between August 1 and May 1), and December 15 for summer visits. We will notify you of the admission decision during the latter part of February for August visits, and during the latter part of January for summer visits.

Please note: all environmental visitors from non-common law countries who have not previously studied the law of the United States or other common law countries are asked to attend the International LL.M. Seminar: Introduction to U.S. Environmental Law and Legal Study, which begins the first full week of August, before beginning their scholarly research in the fall. If this is impossible, you may complete the course by email correspondence before your arrival in the U.S. Summer visitors are also welcome to complete the course by email before coming for a visit.
