Jessup Results 2018

The 2018 team had outstanding results in the Regional competition, earning Regional Runner-Up Team and First Place Memorial and Matt Small received 6thPlace as Speaker.  At the International Rounds, all three speakers – Matt Small, Kelsey Peddie and Andrei Tutui placed in the top 75 out of over 500 speakers. Declan McGarry served as Of Counsel.

Lewis & Clark’s Jessup Moot Court Team had the incredible honor of getting to compete in the Jessup International Competition in 2017 for the second year in a row. The team comprised students Doug Hageman, Kelsey Peddie, Matt Small, Natascha Smith, and Julie Sugano, and was coached by alums Dagmar Butte ’91 and Spencer Wilson ’15. Among the U.S. teams, Lewis & Clark was the third ranked school out of a total of 12 who advanced to the international competition. The top three U.S. schools all had the same win-loss record as Lewis & Clark, but with total points calculated, Loyola Law finished 31st and Georgetown finished 24th overall. This is one time were being “close” was certainly a heartbreaker, but our team had a lot to be proud of.

Jessup Results 2016

Members of the 2016 Lewis & Clark Jessup team were Doug Hageman, George MacDonald, Thomas Payne and Natascha Smith and was coached by Dagmar Butte and Spencer Wilson. The team finished 2nd in the South Regional and advanced to the International Rounds in Washington D.C. They also were honored to participate in a post-International Rounds event in San Francisco with students from Hastings, Cornell and three Chinese law schools that helped them further hone their advocacy skills. At the South Regional, L&C had the 2nd place memorial and George MacDonald and Tom Payne finished 7th and 9th out of just over 70 speakers. In DC, where there were 116 competing teams and 16 exhibition teams from over 90 countries, L&C faced teams from Wayne State, Romania, Cambodia and Stanford. While we did not advance to the top 32, we had some terrific performances from our team members and an amazing opportunity to connect with law students and lawyers (who served as judges) from all over the world.

Lewis & Clark’s Jessup team once again competed in the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Washington, D.C. with good success. The L&C Jessup Team for 2015 - comprised Shane Barnes, Andrew Batwash, Thomas Payne, Ali Ward and Spencer Wilson and coached by L&C alum Dagmar Butte - finished in the top 10 in the Mid-Atlantic Regional where 22 teams and over 80 speakers competed for team and individual honors. The team won the Eight Best Brief prize and Shane Barnes was the Ninth Place oralist. The team impressed the judges for the quality of their legal analysis both in the Briefs and the Oral Argument and oral round judges commented positively on their ability to clearly, directly and accurately answer questions - a skill every lawyer needs but not every lawyer can master.

Lewis & Clark’s Jessup team made a strong showing at the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Washington D.C. The team for 2014 comprised Shane Barnes, Tristan Parker, Brendan Stabeno, Ali Ward, and Spencer Wilson and coached by Lewis & Clark alum Dagmar Butte. The team was a semi-finalist in the Mid-Atlantic Regional where 22 teams and over 80 speakers competed for team and individual honors. The team ranked 3rd going into quarter finals against American University and lost in the semifinals to the eventual Champion UVA. The team won Fourth Best Brief prize. Shane Barnes was the Third Place oralist and received a perfect score of 100 from one of the judges. Brendan Stabeno was Eighth Place Oralist. The feedback for the team should make Lewis & Clark proud as they were consistently praised for their exceptional preparation and understanding of international law and the high quality of their responses to questions.

Lewis & Clark’s Jessup team was once again successful in the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Washington, D.C. in February. The Lewis & Clark Jessup Team for 2013 included Shane Barnes, Sarah Dandurand, Anaiah Krueger, Tristan Parker and Bryan Thompson, and coached by L&C alum Dagmar Butte, was a quarter-finalist in the Mid-Atlantic Regional where 22 teams and over 80 speakers competed for team and individual honors. The team ranked 6th going into quarters and the team also won the Second Best Brief prize. The team lost to American University, the eventual champions, and has high hopes for next year as two team members will be returning to improve upon that quarter final finish.

Jessup Results 2012

Portland finally hit a day of over 60 degree temperatures in early March 2012, but it was the Lewis & Clark Jessup team that was smokin’ hot in the Mid-Atlantic Super Regional in February. The Lewis & Clark Jessup Team for 2012—comprised Emily Christiansen, Sarah Dandurand, Rohit Kapuria, Anaiah Krueger and Emerson Lenon, and coached by L&C alum Dagmar Butte—was a quarter-finalist in the Mid-Atlantic Regional where 24 teams and over 90 speakers competed for team and individual honors. The team ranked 4th with the highest raw point total of any team in the competition going into quarters and the team also won the Best Brief prize.

Rohit Kapuria received the 4th Place Oralist prize and Emerson Lenon placed 9th Best Oralist.  The Brief will go on to compete in a separate brief competition at the Jessup International Rounds that pits the winning briefs from every participating country against one another for world wide top brief honors and based on the regional scores the team has a good chance in that competition. Lewis & Clark is very proud of this team and has high hopes for next year as two team members will be returning to avenge that quarter-final loss to UVA.

Jessup Results 2011

The 2011 Lewis & Clark Jessup team included Rohit Kapuria, Emerson Lenon, Dan Rowan, David Susens and Joe Terrenzio had an amazing run in the Mid-Atlantic Super Regional. The team finished as a semi-finalist in an extremely competitive region that includes most of the D.C. area law schools. The team’s memorial or brief placed 7th and the team also took home 3 speaker awards. Emerson Lenon finished in 11th place while Joe Terrenzio and Dan Rowan placed 1st  and 3rd respectively with U.S. record breaking average scores.
