Editor In Chief
Shayna Rogers
Shayna was born and raised in Corvallis, Oregon. She attended Oregon State University with the initial goal of becoming a veterinarian, working part-time as a veterinary assistant for three years. She eventually changed her major to Environmental Science, specializing in law and policy, and set her sights on law school. Shayna has worked with Animal Law Review since her first year at Lewis & Clark, when she received the Source Checker of the Year award. As an Associate Editor during her second year, Shayna co-authored the 2011-2012 Legislative Review article.
Shayna has also clerked for the Oregon Department of Justice and for Davison Van Cleve PC, a local energy law firm. She looks forward to spending her third year as a clinical intern with the Lewis & Clark Legal Clinic.
In her free time, Shayna enjoys reading, vegan cooking, and being outside. She especially loves spending time with her husband, Ryan, and their cats (who refused to sit for a photograph with their mother).
Managing Editors
Kya Marienfeld
Kya is a second year law student, who came to Lewis & Clark from the beautiful northwoods of Minnesota to study environmental law. She earned her BA in History and Environmental Geoscience from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. She joined Animal Law in her first year as a volunteer source checker, and is very excited to be back in a much busier capacity as a Managing Editor for Volume 19! Last summer, she worked as a law clerk for the nonprofit environmental law firm, Advocates for the West, in Boise, Idaho. After law school, she would like to work in environmental litigation in either the Mountain West or back in the great state of Minnesota. When she’s not hanging out with her wonder-mutt, Fly, or trying unsuccessfully to get cell service while working in the Animal Law office, she is a legal writing TA, a Project Coordinator for the Northwest Environmental Defense Center, a lifelong canoeist, and a rabid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Hannah McCausland
Hannah is a second-year law student at Lewis & Clark. She earned her BA in Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. After graduating from Miami, she spent six months working at a no-kill animal shelter before driving across the country to start law school in Oregon. In the spring of her first year, Hannah joined the Animal Law Review as a Volunteer Source Checker and is very pleased to continue her commitment to ALR as one of the 2012-2013 Managing Editors. This past summer, Hannah worked at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, AZ as an extern in the 355th Fighter Wing JAG office. In her spare time she loves to go for walks with her dog, Rhys, and relax with her husband, Johnathan, and their cat, Miles.
Business Editor
Wynn Heh
Wynn is a 2L originally from the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area. She is a devoted inter-disciplinarian studying international, IP, and environmental law, but is usually better known for her knack for technology and powers of infomancy. Her free time is distributed between computers, crafts, and her cat. It is somewhat embarrassing that she has named all her electronic peripherals but has not bothered to name her cat. In her defense, however, the cat is perfectly capable of functioning without a name—unlike the electronics.
Despite all evidence to the contrary, she does not live in the ALR suite.
Legislative Review Editor
Kimberly White LaDuca
Kimberly is a third year student who relocated from the East Coast in order to study environmental law. She earned her BA at the University of Maryland, College Park with a joint focus in Psychology and Government & Politics. Prior to coming to law school, Kimberly served in Americorps in an inner-city school and became increasingly interested in the connection between health and sustainable agriculture and in the overall disproportionate environmental impacts facing low income communities. During law school she has interned at Crag Law Center and this past summer she worked as a law clerk for the Pacific Northwest Advocacy Center (PEAC). In her free time she loves exploring all the natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest with her husband, Andrew and relaxing with her cat, Olive.
Submissions Editors
Faye Breitreed
Faye is from Arizona originally, and went to the University of Arizona where she studied Environmental Sciences, Family Studies and Human Development. Faye came to Lewis and Clark to study environmental law but is now primarily interested in criminal and civil rights law. She joined Animal Law not only for the great experience that being a part of the journal provides; but because she believes Animal Law is a fascinating new frontier of civil rights law. Faye also happens to love animals and just adopted a sweet half-lab/half-cattle dog puppy named Ruth!
Mandy Rude
Mandy Rude is a rising third year law student. She studies environmental law with a focus in international environmental and wildlife law. Mandy transferred to Lewis and Clark her second year and moved to law school from North Carolina. She founded the new student group, Students for International Environmental Law and has interned at the Center for International Environmental Law. Mandy hopes to work for an organization that fights wildlife crime and trade in the future. Her favorite animal is the tiger which, unfortunately, cannot be in the picture.
Form & Style Editors
Nick Lawton
Nick Lawton is from Huntsville, Alabama originally, but spent a great deal of time in his childhood in Costa Rica. He now lives in Multnomah Village with his dog Buddy. He is primarily interested in environmental and intellectual property law. Nick joined Animal Law because he thinks it is wonderful to provide a serious venue for legal questions about animal rights and animal welfare.
Melissa Young
Melissa is a second year law student and worked as a veterinary technician for five years before coming to Lewis and Clark. She joined Animal Law as a source checker in her first year. In her second year she will be serving as Pro Bono Chair for the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund. In her free time, she loves going out for delicious vegan food, volunteering as a caregiver and events coordinator at Animal Aid, and spending time with her husband and four cats.
Symposium Editor
Jaclyn Leeds
Jaclyn is a 3L from New Hampshire graduating in December 2012 with an emphasis in Animal Law. She has enjoyed clerking for the Animal Legal Defense Fund, writing for Professor David Favre, and is currently clerking for Youth, Rights & Justice. She tested onto Animal Law as a 1L source checker, and has served as Symposium Editor since 2L year. She is also a 2012-2013 Student Animal Legal Defense Fund Co-Director. Jaclyn enjoys hiking with her rescue pup (we rescued each other!) Ebony and munching on fresh fruit with her quaker parrot Houdini.

Editor In Chief
Aurora Paulsen
Aurora grew up in Montana. Almost as soon as she could walk, Aurora started befriending chickens, cats, dogs, horses, and any other animal that would let her get close enough. During law school Aurora has worked as a judicial extern for the Oregon Court of Appeals and as a law clerk for the Animal Legal Defense Fund, and she has authored two law review comments, on organic animal husbandry and food labeling, and co-authored one ABA newsletter piece on urban animal agriculture. She is currently a clinical intern with the Pacific Environmental Advocacy Center and a research scholar for a law professor. Aurora is interested in finding ways to help farm animals and wildlife, and to create a more sustainable agricultural system. To that end, she hopes to pursue a career in environmental law, food law, wildlife law, or animal law. Aurora’s life is enriched by the companionship of two cats and two dogs.
Managing Editors
Rosalia Gobeo
Rosalia is a third year law student at Lewis & Clark. She joined ALR in her first year and was awarded Source Checker of the Year. Rosalia clerked for the Animal Law Clinic this past summer and is currently a research assistant for Professor Kathy Hessler. Born in Oregon, but raised in Montana, Rosalia loves being near the mountains and trees, but she misses snow during Oregon winters.
Laura Hagen
Laura Hagen, second-year student, came to Lewis & Clark from Boston, MA to focus her legal studies on animal and environmental law. Laura earned her BS in English education at Miami University in Oxford, OH. Prior to law school, Laura worked as an animal protection issues specialist at the MSPCA in Boston. Laura clerked last summer for the Oregon Department of Justice and looks forward to clerking next summer for the Animal Legal Defense Fund. Laura serves at the managing editor for Animal Law and as a legal writing teaching assistant, and she spends her free time running, hiking, and enjoying all things Pacific Northwest.
Legislative Review Editor
Laura Warf
Laura is a third year law student who joined ALR during her first year at Lewis & Clark. Prior to her job as Legislative Review Editor, she was a Source Checker and an Associate Editor for Animal Law. Laura currently works at the Portland Federal Public Defender’s office and serves as the Secretary for the Portland Jazz Festival. After graduation she plans to represent local restaurants, wineries, and breweries as an Associate at Davis Wright Tremaine. Laura loves gardening, hiking, camping, and singing, and spends much of her free time relaxing and enjoying life with her husband, Jerod, and pit bull, Diesel.
Submissions Editor

Outside of school, Michelle works with the Animal Protection Litigation section of HSUS.
Matthew T. Merryman
Matthew is a 2L from Kansas City, Missouri. He joined Animal Law Review as a volunteer source checker in his first year, and he is now expanding his role as a Submissions Editor in year two.
