Title: Renewable Energy’s Uncertain Future

Description: Since 2000, the renewable energy industry has experienced unprecedented growth. Oregon has served as a focal point for this growth, with wind energy developments in central and eastern Oregon and smaller scale solar developments in various Oregon cities. Oregon also serves as the headquarters for many international energy companies focused on increasing renewable energy production.

Despite this growth and Oregon’s prominent role in renewable energy development, the future of renewable energy remains uncertain. Congested transmission lines and cheap fossil fuel prices make it difficult for renewable energy producers to sell their power. Tax credits and other policies necessary to promote renewable energy will expire by the end of 2012 if legislatures do not act. Without greater policy support, the renewable energy sector could contract, making Oregon more reliant on fossil fuels.

This lecture will discuss the risks the renewable energy industry faces and provide recommendations for how policymakers and citizens can help advance renewable energy development.
