Earthrise alum Lori Ann Burd ’09, Contract Attorney with the National Wildlife Federation, spoke on two panels at a recent American Bar Association meeting of the Section on Environment, Energy, and Resources. One panel, “Keystone XL Pipe Dreams: Game On or Game Over?” addressed the Keystone XL Pipeline while another, “Pipelines in the Crosshairs: Siting, Permitting, Compliance, and Enforcement After the Keystone XL Nonapproval” considered implications for oil and gas pipelines in general. Burd spoke of the dangers of tar sands pipeline spills; the destruction of the boreal forest in Alberta, Canada; and the enormous carbon impact that continuing to develop tar sands oil would have and how this will accelerate climate change.
