The Luce Scholars Program is a nationally competitive fellowship program. It was launched by the Henry Luce Foundation in 1974 to enhance the understanding of Asia among potential leaders in American society. The program provides stipends, language training, and individualized professional placement in Asia for 15-18 Luce Scholars each year, and welcomes applications from college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals in a variety of fields who have had limited exposure to Asia.
The program is unique among American-Asian exchanges in that it is intended for young leaders who have had limited experience of Asia and who might not otherwise have an opportunity in the normal course of their careers to come to know Asia.
Eligibility: Candidates must be U.S. citizens who, by July 1 of the year they enter the program, will have received at least a bachelor’s degree and will not have reached their 30th birthday. Candidates with graduate degrees are eligible.
Campus Nomination: Applicants must receive a campus nomination. In order to be considered for one, applicants should submit the application, available at the Luce Program website, electronically to the campus representative by September 25. Four letters of recommendation (representing a range of professional and academic experiences) should also be submitted directly to the campus representative. These applications will be reviewed by a campus committee.
Institutional Deadline: September 20. Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to work with the campus representative at least a month in advance of this campus deadline. Final applications are submitted by campus representative around October 15.
