Students Mourned

Spring 2013

Nick Sylvester, a senior math and computer science major from Chico, California, died January 1, 2013.

While at Lewis & Clark, he was a student worker and “ambassador” for the annual fund phonathon, where he became an important member of the calling team. He also worked with Peter Drake, associate professor of computer science, for three summers studying artificial intelligence computer models designed to play the classical Asian game of Go.
He is survived by his parents, Rob and Carol, and his brother, Matthew, and sister, Megan.

Jacob Enrique Valdiviezo, a sophomore from San Francisco, died March 30, 2013, while visiting his family during spring break.

Jacob graduated with honors from Archbishop Riordan High School, where he played cornerback on the football team. Jacob continued to pursue his passion for football during
his time at Lewis & Clark, playing wide receiver for the Pioneers. He was planning to major in economics.

He is survived by his parents, Carlos and Margarita, and his older brother, Carlos.
