Legislative Update & Call To Action

Thanks to grassroots advocacy, victim’s rights are constantly evolving through both litigation and legislation. Knowing what legislative changes are proposed and what new laws have passed is critical to effective victims’ rights advocacy. Three areas of legislative activity that may be of interest:

• In response to sexual violence on the country’s college campuses, three pieces of legislation were recently introduced in Congress: the Campus Accountability and Safety Act (CASA), the Survivor Outreach and Support Campus Act (SOS Campus Act), and the Hold Accountable and Lend Transparency on Campus Sexual Violence Act (HALT Act).
• Congress is also debating the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015 as part of the ongoing national conversation regarding fighting human trafficking.
• In Oregon, S.B. 8 was  introduced to increase the statute of limitations for certain sex crimes from 6 to 20 years.
