Protecting Victim Privacy
May 11, 2015
Last month NCVLI joined the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, the Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence, and the Sexual Assault Center as amici curiae in a case before the Tennessee Supreme Court. In the case, news media filed an appeal seeking to obtain a sexual assault victim’s text messages, emails, video footage, and more. Amici argued that the state’s victims’ rights laws (in the Constitution and in statute) are an exception to the Tennessee Public Records Act, and that disclosure of the requested information would violate the victim’s rights. The case is pending; we will keep you posted.
We are truly honored to stand side-by-side with such wonderful partners in the fight to protect victims’ rights.
