CALS is proud to announce that Lewis & Clark animal law students Rebecca Jenkins and Rajesh Reddy have had their work selected to be presented at the third annual Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics summer program. Taking place July 24 - 27, 2016 and held in partnership with the French animal society, One Voice, this year’s program is dedicated to the theme of the Ethics of Eating Animals. Rebecca, a graduating Animal Law LLM student from Ireland, will be presenting on social justice issues facing slaughterhouse and meat processing plant workers and their communities. Rajesh, a rising 3L, will be drawing attention to the religious and legal complexities underlying India’s rash of beef-ban laws. Both are extremely excited to represent Lewis & Clark Student Animal Legal Defense Fund chapter students in the international animal rights and welfare communities.
Founded in 2006, the Oxford Centre’s summer program invites emerging and established scholars from around the world to engage in critical discussions surrounding the scientific, legal, historical, and moral consideration of nonhuman animals. Themes from the past two years have been the Ethics of Animal Experimentation, and Religion and Animal Protection. The Oxford Centre is also involved in two significant publication projects: the Palgrave Macmillan Animal Ethics Book Series and the Journal of Animal Ethics, which speakers will be invited to submit their papers to.
As part of their participation in the Oxford Centre program, Rebecca and Rajesh hope to engage with prominent voices in the animal law and animal ethics fields and to share their experiences with fellow LC SALDF members and Center for Animal Law Studies faculty when they return.
