For the fifth year in a row, Sierra magazine has named Lewis & Clark one of its top “Cool Schools,” a list that honors America’s greenest colleges and universities. At number 16, Lewis & Clark is the only private school in Oregon to be included.
The Sierra Club rankings are based on surveys that track categories including energy supply, water usage, food, research, curriculum, learning outcomes, purchasing, transportation, waste management, and innovation.
At Lewis & Clark, our approach to sustainability is grounded in our mission to cultivate global thinkers and leaders. We build on the best available scholarship and practice—recognizing the importance and interrelatedness of ecology, economy, and equity—to extend our research and actions beyond our campus and into the wider world. From classes in environmental studies to student-run gardens, Lewis & Clark integrates sustainability at every level.
“Over the last five years, we’ve made important progress in reducing our college’s environmental footprint and advancing sustainability throughout the organization,” said Amy Dvorak, Senior Director of Sustainability and Communications for Lewis & Clark. “We’re proud to be part of a group of colleges and universities pushing one another to higher levels of sustainability.”
For our efforts, The Princeton Review in 2015 ranked Lewis & Clark #1 in its list of Top 50 Green Colleges.
