Faculty and Students Explore “Hot Topics” in Sustainability

The inaugural Hot Topics Sustainability Series highlights faculty from Lewis & Clark’s undergraduate, graduate, and law schools leading conversations on the complexities of sustainability, including climate and energy, decent work and living wages, environmental justice, biodiversity, divestment, art, and education. The weekly series runs through March 20.

Lewis & Clark, which Sierra Club named a Top Five “Cool School” in 2017, is committed to developing and maintaining a sustainable campus, and recognizes the importance of scholarship in ecology, economy, and equity, both on campus and in the global community. The Hot Topics Sustainability Series provides an opportunity for students, faculty, and the surrounding community to engage with many of these complex topics. The weekly talks are not lectures, but rather conversations and workshops meant to inform and inspire.

“Lewis & Clark is filled with pockets of vibrant engagement around matters of sustainability on all three campuses and in the larger Portland community,” said Katharina Altpeter-Jones, associate professor of German language and literature at the undergraduate school and member of the Sustainability Council, who helped develop the series. “[We wanted to] see what synergy we can create by bringing together students, staff, faculty, and other scholars and advocates invested in questions of sustainability.”

The two remaining events for the series are:
