Illia William Hayes ’19, from Phoenix, Arizona, was recently awarded the Christine Fredricks Smith Memorial Scholarship, the College’s most prestigious award exclusively for mathematics majors. This Scholarship was established through a gift from Professor Emeritus Greg Fredricks in memory of his daughter, who graduated from the College in 1992 and was killed in an airplane crash in 2007.
This need-based Scholarship is awarded annually to a mathematics major with Junior or Senior standing and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.500. The faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences select the recipient based on the candidates’ academic abilities and contributions to the life of the Department.
Illia was very appreciative and had this to say:
“Lewis and Clark’s math department has become something of a second home for me, and I’m incredibly grateful for this award. To me, mathematics is a community activity, and I devote myself to not only being a good student, but also a compassionate member of our math family. This is further evidence that I placed my faith in the right place, many thanks to professor Fredricks; it’s inspiring to see an individual care so much about the passionate and enthusiastic students in our community, and I’m blown away that I can count myself among them.”
