A member of Lewis & Clark’s Board of Trustees from 1971 to 1986, he served as chair from 1980 to 1985. He was named a life trustee in 1986. In honor of his many years of dedicated service, Lewis & Clark established the A. William Sweet Scholarship to benefit future Pioneers.

Sweet, who was president of Western Bank, was a lifelong resident of Coos and Curry Counties. Over the years, Sweet received several awards, including an honorary doctorate and an Aubrey R. Watzek Award from Lewis & Clark, a Distinguished Service Award from OHSU, and induction into the Oregon Bankers Hall of Fame.

Sweet, a lifelong Episcopalian, was a humble, kindhearted man. He was an avid tennis player well into his 90s and also enjoyed bridge, cribbage, and fishing. Survivors include his four children, William P. Sweet, Robert K. Sweet, Steven H. Sweet, and Mary Anne Puhl, and a large extended family. His wife, Evelyn Sweet, died in 2010.
