Protecting Trafficking Victims from Harassment

Friday, January 11 is Human Trafficking Awareness Day. NCVLI takes a moment to recall two recent efforts to support victims of trafficking.

In November 2018, NCVLI provided technical assistance to a trafficking victim’s attorney in Maryland.  The victim had prevailed in a civil judgment against her trafficker, but the trafficker had continued to insert himself into the victim’s life, including spreading rumors to damage her reputation.  To prevent the trafficker from further re-victimizing the victim, NCVLI and the victim’s attorney worked on “Cease and Desist” efforts, helping to protect the crime victim from ongoing harassment.

In December 2018, an Ohio attorney - who was working with a trafficking victim who was being harassed on Facebook Messenger by people in the perpetrator’s network - reached out for help.  NCVLI pulled together resources and strategies to stop the online harassment while preserving it as evidence.

If you are representing a victim of crime and need assistance with a victims’ rights issue, send us a Technical Assistance Request.
