Meet Robin:
Where are you from?
I grew up in a small town outside of Buffalo, NY and lived in Minnesota and Wisconsin prior to moving to Oregon. During my college years I studied in the Czech Republic and Germany.
What did you do before you joined Lewis & Clark?
Most recently, I worked for Powell’s Books and Green Bean Books. Previously I’ve worked in academic libraries and volunteered in public libraries.
What is your favorite spot on campus?
As new staff, I’m still exploring campus, but I have been absolutely won over by Václav Havel’s Place by the Fir Acres Theatre. During my own undergraduate years at Carleton College, I studied the Czech dissident the spot commemorates.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy yoga, seeing plays, and pampering my two cats, Rosie and Alexander Hamilton.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
Everything! Writer, librarian, mail carrier, person who names paint colors, astronaut, lawyer, journalist, indexer – lots of things. At one point, I wanted to be a detective because I was an avid reader of the Hardy Boys and Encyclopedia Brown books. Library work doesn’t feel far off from that when investigating resources and completing reference interviews!
What was your favorite college course?
The class that has stuck with me the most was a film class I took on a whim, “European Women Filmmakers.” It involved watching over thirty films in the span of ten weeks and had rigorous class discussions, with only six students enrolled. The course fine-tuned how I looked at visual mediums, whether film, paintings, advertising, or journalism.
What is your home library like? / Do you collect any particular types of books?
At home, I keep an equal mix of favorites alongside books I aspire to read. These range from graphic novels, to social history, to plays, to picture books.
What is your favorite LC classification?
Meandering through the Ps (language and literature) and Ds (world history) is a favorite pastime, but I love exploring the stacks to learn about fields and inquiries across disciplines.
Best part about Watzek:
The people. Lewis & Clark has some of the kindest, most courteous people I’ve encountered, and I’m grateful to be part of the community here.
