We are delighted to share the conversation between Professor of Practice, Joyce Tischler, and Naeema Muhammad, Organizing Co-Director of the North Carolina Environmental Justice Network (NCEJN) to discuss Industrial Animal Agriculture, Climate Change, and Environmental Injustice.
Joyce and Naeema discuss how concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are disproportionately located in low income and communities of color, raising a host of health, social justice and environmental justice issues. They also discuss the connection between CAFOs, climate change, and other environmental harms. For example, did you know that the total emissions from global livestock is 7.1 Gigatonnes of Co2-equiv per year, representing 14.5 percent of all anthropogenic GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions?
