OEI Summer 2023 Book and Podcast List
As you plan for some rest and relaxation this summer, we hope you consider enjoying these ideas for new books and podcasts. Whether you are at the coast, on a road trip, a local park, or anywhere you can snag some down time, summer is a great time to check these out.
Here are some of our favorite and most anticipated media to enjoy this summer:
BOOKS
- Colson Whitehead delivers a sequel to Harlem Shuffle, with his new read about the historical NY Black diaspora of Harlem with Crook Manifesto.
- What Happened to Ruthie Ramirez by Claire Jiménez: a heart-warming mystery about the bonds between women, and how a Latine family overcomes generational trauma.
- Adelaide is a love story like no other. It is a book about friendship, mental health, grief, and ultimately, self-love.
- Flux, a quirky book from an Asian author which touches upon sci-fi themes, as well as queer love and attraction.
- Rest is Resistance, also known as the Nap Ministry, reminds us that resting and taking care of ourselves is a form of social justice.

PODCASTS
- Levar Burton Reads: a nostalgic podcast of Levar’s warm and familiar voice takes on us journeys with short stories and novellas in this podcast.
- Brown Girl Green: two Black women tackle climate change and social justice in one energizing podcast

- All my Relations podcast explores relationships to land, to our creatural relatives, and to one another. Each episode invites guests to delve into a different topic facing Native America
- One of the longest running queer podcasts, Outward discusses queer culture, interviews guests and throws out laugh out loud dialogue.
