How can I better understand the words used by the prosecutor, judge or defense attorney as they talk about the investigation and prosecution of crime?

The vocabulary of the criminal justice system can be overwhelming. As is true of all professions, whether it be medicine, mechanics, plumbing, or astronomy, the legal profession has developed its own unique vocabulary that attorneys and judges are very familiar with.
