Amy Sue Baker

Amy Sue Baker JD ’02 passed away on November 8, 2019. She was 47.

Born on December 14, 1971, Amy was sent home from the Tillamook County (Oregon) Hospital in a Christmas stocking. The eighth in a family that grew to 12 children, she made her way in the world with passion, grit, and determination. She graduated from Astoria High School in 1990 and, like several of her sisters, attended the University of Portland, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1994. A year in Salzburg, Austria, on an exchange program was a life-changing highlight.

While working for Senator Ron Wyden, Amy met her future husband, Michael Campbell. The couple later moved to Washington, D.C., where she gained experience in a lobbying firm, meeting luminaries along the way. She returned to Portland, Oregon, in 1998 to pursue her law degree and start a family. Amy built circles of friends at every stage of her life and she was often irreverent. Being a mother was the most important thing to her, and one of the last things she did was to buy her sons a brick in Pioneer Square, inscribed with their names, to be a permanent remembrance of the completely urban life they all loved and a token of their mutual devotion to each other.

Amy is survived by her sons Ernie and Hank; their father and Amy’s former husband, Michael Campbell; her mother, Sandra; siblings Angela Baker, Valerie Baker, Mark Baker, Brenda Parker, Heidi Sue Baker, Travis Baker, Sally Baker, Gabrielle Baker, Shanisee Baker Eller, and Jacob Baker-Mendonca; and many other loving relatives. Amy was preceded in death by her brother Benjamin and her father, Bruce.
