Kelly House JD ’20, environmental reporter for Bridge Michigan, was named Michigan Journalist of the Year by the Michigan Press Association.

Kelly House JD ’20 is the winner of the 2023 Environmental Journalist Award from the Michigan chapter of the Sierra Club. House won the honor for her reporting in 2022 in the Bridge Michigan. She documented how some Michigan water systems were crumbling from disrepair, and how fights over septic systems threatened one of the state’s most pristine lakes. She broke the story of a cancer-causing hexavalent chromium spill in the Huron River, and traveled to Isle Royale to tell the story of long-time cabin owners fighting to keep their properties. House joined the Bridge staff in 2020. Previously, she reported for the Oregonian, where her coverage of the environment and other topics garnered national honors and sparked state efforts to better protect Oregon’s natural resources.

Kelly House JD ’20, whose investigations into groundwater mining and other environmental challenges in Oregon won national honors, has joined Bridge Magazine to cover the environment, natural resources, and conservation issues. A Michigan native, House was a reporter at The Oregonian newspaper for six years. Her reporting on the environment ranged from land and water rights to the resurgence of gray wolves, the impact of climate change on Western drought conditions, and the armed standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.
