Powell C. “Cam” Groner III JD ’86 peacefully passed away July 17, 2017, at the end of a months-long battle with Creutzfeld-Jakob disease.

Cam was born April 12, 1949, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Powell Groner Jr. and Helen Underwood Groner. He did his undergraduate studies at Yale and earned a master’s degree from Harvard before moving to Oregon in 1972 to work in education and human services. Following law school, Cam practiced privately and retired as the chief legal officer for Legacy Health.

A subversive sense of humor kept Cam from allowing any situation to become too serious. Incredibly bright, he had a phenomenal memory and was the consummate fly-fisher. Cam’s retirement career was as the first director of the Deschutes River Alliance legal team and vice president of the organization’s board of directors. He was also a member of its founding circle. The rivers and fish that Cam loved benefited greatly from his advocacy and extensive legal background as he worked diligently to find resolutions to the problems facing the lower Deschutes.

Cam is survived by his children Christine James, Lauren Groner, and Geoff Groner; granddaughter Emerson Lee James; his life partner, Ingrid Brydolf JD ’93; his brothers Chris and Cary; and his best friend and fishing partner, Dave Baca.
