This course will examine the sources and characteristics of legal rights. Why are humans entitled to them, and why non-humans are denied them. We will delve into whether rights should be limited to humans and, if not, what rights should non-human animals be entitled to, and why. We will discuss those cases that have either recognized or not recognized a non-human animal’s legal rights in the United States, India, Pakistan, Argentina, and Colombia.
